According to the band's bio, the members of Ludo are "vigilante bushwhackers with a heart of gold who are out to bang your psyche and love you dead."
An interesting description for five guys from St. Louis who, inspired by bands such as Weezer, Ween, bring the geek rock like no other in 2008.
Ludo has just released its third CD, "You're Awful, I Love You," and will play the 9:30 Club in D.C. tomorrow night opening for the Presidents of the United States of America.
Lead singer and guitarist Andrew Volpe took a few minutes out of his busy schedule while he was in Los Angeles awaiting that evening's performance to answer a few questions.
So you guys are from St. Louis and you are out in L.A. right now? I know I always get a lot of mixed reactions from that area from bands. How is it for you guys?
Yeah. It's going great man. It's really exciting. We fit out here very nicely. I mean it's....there's not really a winter. The weather is nice and the vibe out here is good. People out here respond well to our music.
Things seem to be really picking up for the band. The "Love Me Dead" video just premiered on MTV'S Total Request Live. Did you get to watch it?
That was really weird. We didn't actually get to watch it because we didn't have access to a TV at the time, but we had everyone watch it and TIVO it.
The song "Love Me Dead," oddly enough is a very fun song in a weird way and the video is lots of fun as well.
We were all kind of sitting around and someone had the idea of making it just one continuous shot, you know, with me sitting on the couch delivering the lyrics, and everyone else in the band behind me acting out the lyrics. And we got masked people and brainstormed and came up with it and put it together. We just wanted to let it be this fun, "live school play" vibe. It was like "get these spots" and "hurry, change the costumes."
You guys also just did South by Southwest, and you have the Vans Warped Tour coming up this summer.
Yeah, we've been down there (SXSW) every year we've been a band, but we never had an official showcase until this year, so that was pretty awesome. We have played the Warped Tour before but we never had a very long run. We are doing the whole second leg of it this year. It seems like Warped Tour is trying to be a little more diverse this year. It's exciting to know there is a large, diverse group of people that might be into us. It's cool that we can be part of that "Warped Tour world," and we can also be part of the weirder stuff, or other mainstream stuff. At different times the band fits into different situations.
You know you are a rock star when you have your own Wikipedia page.
Yeah, you know, it really makes me wonder about the entire content of Wikipedia. It's based on a few semi-factoids. It's like....why is it even there?
"You're Awful, I Love You" just came out and it's your first major label album. Has this album cycle been a lot different for you guys, from the first two releases?
Oh yeah. It's like night and day. We were just five dudes in a van trying to push ourselves for several years, grinding it out for every inch. All of the sudden, there is this whole team of people helping to push the vehicle, of you know, being Ludo and trying to bring Ludo to as many people as possible. It's very rewarding.
Was the impact really that immediate?
No, I would say it was a slow process. The label dug their roots into the band and really started pushing us the closer it got to the record coming out. The only thing that was really a big break for us, if we had one at all, was that KROQ out here in L.A. added us and has been playing us. Last night our song was their most requested song. We have no concept of that. I don't even know what that means and it's changing things very quickly out here for us. It's all very thrilling. That's the only thing that really happened that felt like a switch flipping. The rest has been all very gradual.
Your songs give me a vibe of, and I mean this endearingly, geek rock. You list a lot of bands on your Web site as influences, and at least on "Drunken Lament," I could hear some Weezer in there.
Yeah, I'd say Weezer is a strong influence on us. Obviously when the Blue Album came out it changed a lot for a lot of people and it sort of distilled what rock could be. It was full of harmony and power. It was a quick central power pop record. So, that is a central nugget for us, but still only a nugget. Our songs are very diverse, mainly because the five of us are so diverse. It makes it very fun. You can make each song its own little movie. We have been big Ween fans. One song to the next sounds like a completely different band. That's awesome to be able to make each song it's own entity.
Are there any new records that you are into right now?
Ween "La Cucaracha" I don't know, there are a lot.
You are out on tour right now with Presidents of the United States of America. How have the shows with those guys been
Not only are they a ton of fun and amazing live, but they have great fans, a very strong, active fan base. They are also incredibly nice to us. We have never played with a band that has gone out of their way as much to be cool and hang out and talk to us as they have. It's been a really great tour for us.
What's next for the band?
Warped doesn't start for us until mid-July. We are going to be going out with a band called The Spill Canvas from May until July. We also have some random radio festival coming up in May. Oh, and we are playing at the NCAA Final Four this year. For the most part, we are all fans. We don't follow like individual teams through the season, but growing up we'd get into it every time March came around. I love the "Cinderella" stories. But when you are constantly in the van, it's tough to follow sports. I do always try to make sure I know what the St. Louis Cardinals are doing though.
That's a great opportunity. How did you score that?
I'm not really sure, probably something to do with the label. In the past, we used to feel every inch of progress. Now for the past three weeks things have come together that we really consider gold from heaven. We have no idea what to make of it but we are just trying to enjoy the ride.
