County high school bands show off at Maryland Hall

When I was in high school, I had a ton of friends who had bands. They were forced to put on their own shows in basements, VFWs and dog kennels, often being chased from venue to venue by older folks who could not stand the noise. For this reason, it was extremely inspiring to see the kind of support given to high school bands by organizations and individuals around the county at Saturday's Anne Arundel High School Battle of the Bands at Maryland Hall.Ten bands had the opportunity to showcase their...

Declare Yourself Inauguration party

I had the chance to attend an Inauguration celebration Sunday night in Washington D.C. hosted by Declare Yourself, an organization started by television producer and philanthropist Norman Lear. The group helped register over 4 million young voters over the past two elections, and that night officially launched it's Born Again American campaign. The party, hosted by Jessica Alba,  featured performances by Maroon 5 and John Legend, and a  DJ set by Samantha Ronson closed out...

National bands peform at Annapolis mall

S-Curve Records recording artist We the Kings stopped by Westfield Annapolis mall this week for an acoustic performance and signing. The "Hello My Name Is..." tour is hitting 13 Hot Topic stores and features acoustic performances from We the Kings, Hey Monday and Cash Cash.It was kind of an odd setup, as the poor Hot Topic employees had to clear the front and back of the merchandise-packed store for the event. The store was closed for about 3 hours, and some kids waited in line for as long...

METALLICA!!!

Metallica is one of those bands I never really bought into. I mean, I was in my teens when the band released its worst albums "Load," and "Reload," so it make sense. And having to hear "Until It Sleeps" and "Fuel" on the radio every five seconds, not to mention that awful song used for "Mission: Impossible II." Not only was the Metallica I knew awful, it was inescapable.Of course, I heard good Metallica as I lived life. I know about as many Metallica...

My first favorite song

Favorite songs are a funny thing. They change all the time. Your favorite song could be completely different depending on what mood it is that relates to that song or what you were going through at that point in your life. It could be something you hate 2 weeks later or adore 10 years later. I was trying to remember today what my earliest memory of a favorite song is, and the first song I can remember playing over and over again on my record player (the song that forced me to learn how to do so on...

Do album covers matter anymore?

Here is an example of a few artists who don't seem to think so. Whether it is the dumb looking Hoobadudes or this disturbing baby on board Morrissey cover, both covers beg the obvious: WTF!?! (click post title for pictures)

Concert review: Smashing Pumpkins at D.A.R. Constitution Hall

A two-night stand at a largish venue is ambitious, not just for any artist, but especially for one that peaked in popularity more than ten years ago. Add to that a mostly non-pop set played to a relatively pop-sized crowd, and the kind of complications that arise are fairly intuitive. The Smashing Pumpkins played two shows last week to a mostly-filled D.A.R. Constitution Hall in Washington, D.C., and the band's biggest fans were probably thrilled with the almost 50 song set between the two evenings,...

Smashing expectations

Smashing Pumpkins front man Billy Corgan is called a lot of things. "Genius" and "innovator" float near the top of that list, but so does "asshole" and "self indulgent." A new documentary in stores Nov. 11 shows him as, well, sort of all of those things, but above all, an artist. "If All Goes Wrong," a two-disc DVD set showcasing the band's recent return from its 8-year hiatus. Conveniently, the Pumpkins will be playing two special "20th...
