Navy Loses Defenders

Cornerback Darius Terry has been dismissed from the Navy football team due to a violation of team rules. Terry, who would have been a senior next season, appeared in 13 games and made seven total tackles in 2008.     Terry emerged from spring practice No. 2 on the depth chart at free safety behind Kwesi Mitchell, who will be a sophomore. The 5-foot-7, 168-pound native of Houston, Texas had played in eight games and made 17 tackles in 2007.     Terry's...

Merchant Coming Back

Navy's football team got better yesterday without holding a practice or any other type of team function. The Midshipmen improved because safety Emmett Merchant informed head coach Ken Niumatalolo that he intends to remain at the Naval Academy and rejoin the football team.     Fans will remember that Merchant did not participate in spring practice because he had told the coaching staff that he was planning to leave the Naval Academy upon...

Duke 10, Navy 0

This one is over folks. Duke scored four more unanswered goals in the second quarter to turn this into a total rout. Attackman Zach Howell scored two goals to open the period and the onslaught continued with Mike Catalino and Sam Payton also scored.     Meanwhile, Navy's offense just cannot get untracked. The Midshipmen have committed 15 turnovers with most being unforced. The Mids have taken just 12 shots with very few actually challenging Blue...

Duke 5, Navy 0

It has been a nightmare start for the Navy men's lacrosse team in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at Duke University. Duke was absolutely on fire in the first quarter, scoring six goals on eight shots. Navy keeper Tommy Phelan did not see the ball well on a side of the field that is definitely darker than the other. Midfielder Brad Ross scored two goals while Ned Crotty, Max Quinzani and Robert Rotanz and Will McKee also scored for the Blue...

Tormey and Paulus

Navy close defenseman Andy Tormey will have one strong supporter at Koskinen Stadium in Durham, N.C. for tomorrow's first round playoff game against Duke. Tormey is close friends with former Duke basketball standout Greg Paulus as the two were part of the same graduating class at Christian Brothers Academy in Syracuse, N.Y.   Last year, Paulus attended the first round NCAA Tournament game between Navy and North Carolina and was spotted wearing a Navy lacrosse t-shirt....

Barnes, Kettani Report Premature

It turns out that Navy senior football players Eric Kettani and Tyree Barnes HAVE NOT signed free agent contracts with the New England Patriots. That report was premature as New England is among several NFL teams interested in signing Kettani or Barnes.     I just spoke with Chad Wiestling, agent for both Barnes and Kettani. Wiestling said the Patriots, Indianapolis Colts and other teams have contacted him about Barnes and Kettani, but he has...

Seaton Not Coming

Back in February, around the time of National Signing Day for football, we posted a couple blog entries about Kavon Seaton. For those who are unaware, Seaton was the starting quarterback at the Naval Academy Prep School and showed tremendous potential. Suffice to say, the Navy coaching staff was excited about the California native's future as a triple-option quarterback.      Seaton surprised the Navy coaching staff when he signed a National...

NFL Tryouts

Several scouts with National Football League teams have visited the Naval Academy to work out three potential professional prospects - fullback Eric Kettani, slot back Shun White and wide receiver Tyree Barnes.       Those three seniors all participated in a combine-type tryout with the Green Bay Packers, Indianapolis Colts and New England Patriots a couple weeks ago. Last Thursday, a scout with the Baltimore Ravens ran the three players through...
