But when complications arose with his insurance, and a necessary surgery would not be covered, it was more than his friends and local community could stand

That's when Keri and Bryan Glorioso, owners of Lisa's Small Plates restaurant in Stevensville decided to take action. On Sunday, July 13 from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Lisa's Small Plates is hosting a Live Auction Benefit to raise money to help with Doug's medical expenses. "He's such a great guy," says Keri. "He has been a contributor in the community in so many ways."

Once word got around, donations for the live auction began streaming in from gift certificates at local restaurants to services from local merchants. A week timeshare in Costa Rica in a two-bedroom villa, a PRS Santana SE guitar signed by Mr. Paul Reed Smith, car washes from Great American Car Wash, a golf round for four at Hunters Oak Golf Course and Glenn Dale Golf Course, a queen-size mattress set and more are among the items to be auctioned.

Lisa's Small Plates has donated dinner for six cooked by Executive Chef Robert Vause, and Doug himself contributed an It's the Pits pig roast and many forms of sports memorabilia. There will also be a 50/50 raffle and door prizes. "Our goal is to raise $10,000," says Keri, "but of coarse, we would all love to be able to raise more."

For more information about the live auction benefit, call 410-604-2550.

SAFETY 1st FOR THE 4th

ANNAPOLIS, Md. — As Americans prepare to celebrate Independence Day with traditional holiday activities, Governor Martin O’Malley is urging Marylanders to keep safety first and foremost at all times over the 3-day weekend.

“We are blessed to enjoy the legacy of democracy, justice and prosperity passed down 232 years ago by our Founding Fathers, whose spirit, faith, courage and compassion lives in the heart of each of us,” Governor O’Malley said. “As we celebrate those values that make America a great nation and Americans a great people, let us remember to do so safely, and with courtesy and respect for our fellow citizens, our wildlife and our natural resources,” the Governor said.

Whatever folks have planned for the holiday weekend, following simple, common sense rules can make the difference between a fun, safe event or one that ends with a trip to the emergency room.

Citizens traveling – whether on our roadways or waterways – are reminded to obey speed limits and other traffic laws, avoid use of alcohol, and operate their boat or motor vehicle safely.
