Navy Fullback Battle

It appears that current freshman Alexander Teich has solidified his status as the starting fullback. Teich, at 6-foot and 200 pounds, is smaller than the three most notable fullbacks of the current triple-option era - Kyle Eckel, Adam Ballard and Eric Kettani. However, the Texas native is probably more elusive than any of the aforementioned - displaying good hips, an ability to cutback quickly and a certain shiftiness in traffic.
Teich also runs with power, a fact he displayed during Monday's intrasquad scrimmage when he literally ran over inside linebacker Ross Pospisil. That is no easy feat as Pospisil is one of the sturdiest, most sure tacklers on the squad, but in this instance Teich delivered the blow and kept on going.
There is a tremendous battle being waged for the backup spot between Kevin Campbell and Vince Murray, who will be a senior and junior, respectively, during the 2009 season. Campbell and Murray have both had their moments and are virtually tied for second on the depth chart.
"Right now it's still neck-and-neck. Kevin's had his glimpses and so has Vince. They've both been steady the whole time. That's probably one that's going to go down to the wire," head coach Ken Niumatalolo said.
Campbell is a workmanlike sort who always gets forward progress and has an ability to make the tough yards inside. On several runs during Monday's scrimmage, the powerfully-built 5-foot-11, 193-pounder moved the pile and gained more yardage than initially appeared possible.
Murray may have the best balance of the three fullbacks and has broken several long runs during spring camp. He led the fullback trio with 36 yards on nine carries during Monday's scrimmage.
