Comment ranking gives the users authority

Posted: April 27, 4:01 pm | (permalink) | (4 comments)

thumbs_newOn Thursday, April 23 we rolled out a new comment ranking system. The system gives any signed-in hometown user the ability to participate in determining the overall value of a particular comment by giving it a thumbs-up or a thumbs-down. Over time, having one's own comments voted up or down will add to or subtract from their point level, affecting their karma. Karma is a system of values ranging from 'terrible' to 'excellent'. Those with better karma will affect comments more than someone with bad karma since their votes will assign more points for/against a comment. Comments with a low rating as determined by down votes will appear hidden, but still be available for those who REALLY want to read them. For SPAM and other messages that violate our rules of participation, we still have the "report abuse" feature which submits a particular comment to Hometown staff for review. By implementing this scaled system, we are hoping to lend more authority of the commenting content to the user community.

Report Abuse or Vote In order to allow the user community the ability to collectively rank the value of comments posted on the Capital Gazette websites we have implemented a thumbs-up/down system. All logged-in users may participate by voting up/down each comment. If others vote on your comment, your individual score will go up/down depending on the votes. Initially, everyone starts with a score of zero, and must earn credits to have significant voting weight. Individuals with higher scores will have more voting weight.    1

If Tina was banned for life, praise Jesus! That woman was a complete and utter menace. Good riddance to all of that nasty rubbish.
