Cornerback Darius Terry has been dismissed from the Navy football team due to a violation of team rules. Terry, who would have been a senior next season, appeared in 13 games and made seven total tackles in 2008.
Terry emerged from spring practice No. 2 on the depth chart at free safety behind Kwesi Mitchell, who will be a sophomore. The 5-foot-7, 168-pound native of Houston, Texas had played in eight games and made 17 tackles in 2007.
Terry's departure is eased by the fact projected starting safety Emmett Merchant has decided to remain at the Naval Academy. Merchant did not participate in spring practice while contemplating a transfer.
Navy sports information director Scott Strasemeier confirmed that Terry had been dismissed from the team by head coach Ken Niumatalolo, but declined to provide specifics. Strasemeier also confirmed that outside linebacker Travis Sudderth has been dismissed from the Naval Academy.
Sudderth appeared in seven games as a special teams performer in 2008. He opened the spring as the starter at outside linebacker, but fell off the depth chart completely following a disappointing camp.
