Karma changes

Posted: June 30, 8:13 am | (permalink) | (6 comments)

Some months ago we instituted a "karma" system to our story comments. Registered users of the site who place comments on stories earn a karma score from up or down votes by other registered users. Depending on votes a commentator can earn a rating of: terrible, bad, neutral, good or excellent.

A user's voting weight depends upon their rating as a commentator. A vote from a user with an excellent rating carries more weight than a voter with a lower rating.

We've changed what it takes to earn the various ratings. Now a user must get many more down votes to earn a terrible rating while it's conversely more difficult to earn an excellent rating.

Because it's now harder to achieve a good or excellent rating we've increased the voting weight for those granted higher ratings.

Comments that accumulate low scores are hidden - although readers can unhide them. We've lowered the score at which a comment is hidden.

Comments from users with terrible ratings will automatically be hidden on posting, although, like other hidden comments, can still be seen by readers and receive votes.

Report Abuse or Vote In order to allow the user community the ability to collectively rank the value of comments posted on the Capital Gazette websites we have implemented a thumbs-up/down system. All logged-in users may participate by voting up/down each comment. If others vote on your comment, your individual score will go up/down depending on the votes. Initially, everyone starts with a score of zero, and must earn credits to have significant voting weight. Individuals with higher scores will have more voting weight.    1

I still don't get it!! How does one person's opinion outweigh the value of another?? People have a wide variety opinions and not all their opinions offer the same wisdom, insite, or add value to the conversation. I understand the "voting" up or down on agreement on an issue, but not a value system that sets one person in the community ahead of the other. It's undemocratic and discourages discourse.

Karma equals censorship - 2009-07-01

It appears to me that newspapers have always insisted on and benefited by the 1st Amendment to the Constitution; and good newspapers have always claimed they impartially report the news. Therefore, to give a grade, to the writer of a blog influences how others perceive the story. I have never been given the right to grade others' opinions and would decline it. Was it Voltaire who said, I disapprove of what you say, but I defend to the death your right to say it.
Regardless the first amendment says, Congress shall make no law abridging the freedom of speech, etc. Philip Merrill was an incredible man and publisher; I would like to see the kind of journalism that was in the Capital under his watch. I also think it would increase readership and interest, if the Capital published the blogs as least once a week, especially when the topic is one like free speech and has this much interest. it would teach people about blogs too.

Mob Rule - 2009-06-30

I still don't understand the purpose of this policy. If someone is obnoxious or abusive in their comments, maybe...but most of the comments are hidden simply because a group of people disagree with an individual's point of view. I guess I don't understand why a newspaper, whose foundations lie in the principle of the First Amendment, would allow the masses to censor someone with a differing opinion. Wouldn't it be easier to eliminate the comments altogether?

This is good - 2009-06-30

It is frustrating to be rated down just because people disagree with you. Ratings should be based on the quality of the argument, not whether or not you agree with the argument.
