It is true. Navy does have a new uniform, although the changes are subtle and not immediately noticeable.
First and foremost, the most significant change involves the material used for the jerseys. Equipment manager Greg Morgenthaler said they are now made of a material called Stretch-Mesh Cordura. "It provides a tighter fit and is more breathable," Morgenthaler said when asked why that particular material is better than what Navy jerseys were previously made from.
In terms of noticeable changes, the Navy jersey now has the Marine Corps emblem on one shoulder and the anchor insignia on the other. Both patches were used on the special Army-Navy uniforms that Nike produced last year. Apparently, the anchor insignia hearkens back to the 1950s when it was part of the Navy football uniform. Obviously, the Marine Corps emblem was incorporated to recognize that many Naval Academy graduates enter that branch of the service.
We hear that Navy will wear a special commemorative uniform for the home game against Western Kentucky. That is the day the 50th anniversary of Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium will be celebrated and one can only guess that Navy will wear some sort of throwback uniforms.
