Monday Practice Notes

Head coach Ken Niumatalolo said Navy will likely stick with the new offensive line alignment that was unveiled on Saturday against Notre Dame. Eric Douglass, a 6-foot-2, 273-pound sophomore from Owasso, Okla., started at center and played a half before suffering a knee injury.

Niumatalolo said the injury was not believed to be serious and that if Douglass can play on Saturday he will likely start again at center. That means senior Curtis Bass, who started the initial nine games of the season at center, would make his second straight start at right guard.

Bass moved back to center against Notre Dame after Douglass went out and senior Andy Lark took over at right guard. Lark, Brady DeMell and David Hong have all seen time at right guard, a position that clearly has been unsettled all season.

Niumatalolo has been critical of the offensive line's performance at times this season, but said the unit rebounded from a poor performance against Temple by putting forth a strong effort against Notre Dame. The Midshipmen rolled up 348 yards rushing on Saturday, believed to be their most against the Fighting Irish in years.

    "

Any time you rush for over 300 yards against Notre Dame, the line had to be doing something right," Niumatalolo said.

Meanwhile, Alexander Teich will remain the primary kickoff returner after taking over that role against Notre Dame. Teich, who replaced plebe Gee Gee Greene as the deep man on kickoffs, had one return for 20 yards on Saturday.

"We're just trying to get a little spark going back there," Niumatalolo said of the decision to use Teich on kickoff returns.

Finally, Niumatalolo held out hope that slotback Marcus Curry could return against Delaware. Curry has now missed three games since straining a quadriceps muscle during practice.

"I think he’s gotten much better," Niumatalolo said of Curry, who participated in post-practice conditioning on Monday. "I think when you have a hamstring or a quad, guys are afraid to open up. Marcus is just a little apprehensive."
