Dobbs To Be Honored At Philadelphia Sportswriters Dinner Tonight

ANNAPOLIS, Md.—Navy quarterback Ricky Dobbs will be honored tonight at the annual Philadelphia Sportswriters Dinner for being named the Army-Navy Game Most Valuable Player.

Dobbs led Navy to a 17-3 victory over the Black Knights by rushing for 113 yards and a touchdown on 33 carries, while completing three of his seven pass attempts for 61 yards and a touchdown.  It was Navy’s eighth-consecutive win over Army and gave the Mids a record seventh-consecutive Commander-In-Chief’s Trophy.

Others being honored tonight include Philadelphia Eagles tight end Brent Celek, Eagles head coach Andy Reid, Willie Green of the Philadelphia 76ers, Phillies manager Charlie Manuel, members of the 1960 Philadelphia Eagles NFL Championship Team and members of the 1985 Villanova NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship Team.

Dobbs led Navy to a school-record tying 10 wins in 2009, a seventh-consecutive bowl game, a victory over Notre Dame for the second time in three years and a 35-13 thrashing of Missouri to win the Texas Bowl.

He has compiled a career record of 10-3 (.769) as a starter, rushing for over 100 yards in nine of his 13 career starts and scoring at least one touchdown in all 13 of his career starts.

Despite playing with a broken kneecap over the final six games and missing the majority of two games, Dobbs scored a school-record 27 touchdowns and set the NCAA record for single-season rushing touchdowns by a quarterback.  Florida’s Tim Tebow and Chance Harridge of Air Force previously held the record.

Dobbs needs just 12 rushing touchdowns next year to set the NCAA record for most rushing touchdowns by a quarterback in back-to back years.  The current record is 38 set by Stacey Robinson of Northern Illinois (19 in 1989 and 19 in 1990) and Eric Crouch of Nebraska (20 in 2000 and 18 in 2001).

His 35-career touchdowns are the second most in school history (record is 43 by Chris McCoy).   He needs 25 rushing touchdowns next year to break the NCAA career record for rushing touchdowns by a quarterback, set by Eric Crouch of Nebraska (59 from 1998-01).

Dobbs ranked No. 2 nationally in touchdowns scored (27) and points per game, averaging 12.46 points per contest.  He finished 12th in points responsible for per game (rushing and passing touchdowns), averaging 15.23 points per contest.

He has scored four or more rushing touchdowns on four different occasions during his career, including three times this year.  No other Navy player has more than one-career four-rushing touchdown day.

Dobbs played a role in 33 of the Mids’ 51 touchdowns in 2009 (27 rushing, six passing) and his 198 points responsible for in 2009 is a school record.  He has been responsible for 252 points in his career, which is tied for the third most in school history.

His 162 points scored in 2009 stands second all-time on the Mids’ single-season points scored list, trailing Bill Ingram who scored 174 points in 1917.  Dobbs is one of only four different players in program history to reach 100 points in a season and one of only two to score more than 120.  His 210-career points rank as the third most in school history.

He is just the third quarterback in school history and 37th quarterback in NCAA history to rush for 1,000 yards and pass for 1,000 yards in a single-season.  Chris McCoy rushed for 1,370 yards and passed for 1,203 yards in 1997, while Craig Candeto rushed for 1,112 yards and passed for 1,140 yards in 2003.

He has thrown just four interceptions in 121-career attempts (.033), the lowest interception percentage in school history. He is averaging 10.3 yards per pass attempt in his career, which is the second-best average in school history.

His 2,234 yards of total offense in 2009 ranks second all-time at Navy for a single season behind Chris McCoy (2,573 in 1997).   His 2,941 yards of career total offense ranks third behind Chris McCoy (5,958 yards, 1995-97) and Kaipo-Noa Kaheaku-Enhada (3,277, 2005-08).
