Head coach Ken Niumatalolo revealed after practice today that Navy will wear its new Nike Enforcer uniforms in the EagleBank Bowl. Those specially-designed uniforms, which are based on the Marine Corps colors, were unveiled for the Army-Navy game.
Niumatalolo said this will be the last time Navy wears those particular uniforms. Players will be allowed to keep the jerseys following the bowl and Navy will return to the traditional uniform it has worn for years beginning next season.
I had an inkling Navy might be considering sticking with the new look... after all it produced a 34-0 victory over the archrival. I also noticed that numerous players were wearing the shoes that came with the new uniforms during practice this week.
Yet I must admit I was a bit surprised when I asked Niumatalolo and he readily admitted that Navy was indeed planning to wear the new uniforms, which feature dark blue pants with the blood red stripe just like Marines wear.
"The players like it and the recruits like it," Niumatalolo said when asked about why Navy is wearing the Enforcer unis. "Kids think its cool. Uniforms are a big deal to young guys, they are a big deal in recruiting. It was special for the Army-Navy game, we're going to wear them again in the bowl game, but then we're going to go back to our traditional look."
