Snow totals, city roads, county schools

The official inch count of snow at Baltimore-Washington Airport came to 21 inches, the sixth-highest two-day snowfall on record since 1893, said Bryan Jackson, a meterologist with the National Weather Service in Sterling, Va.

Jackson said the 20.5 inches that fell on Saturday alone was the fifth-largest one-day snowfall on record. The storm brought December's snowfall to 22.2 inches, breaking the record for total snowfall in December that previously was 20.4 inches in 1966.

Unofficial totals provided by trained storm spotters around the county put the total snowfall at 22.5 inches in Glen Burnie, 21 inches in Crofton, 20.8 inches in Annapolis, 18 inches in Gambrills and 18 inches in Millersville, Jackson said.

Officials are urging residents to stay off the roads today as snow removal continues thoughout the city. Today workers are trying to clear all major roads, and will continue with smaller residential roads tomorrow, said Phil McGowan, a city spokesman.

Three vehicles have been towed from snow emergency routes where police asked residents to remove their cars, McGowan said. Also, the city has borrowed three humvees from the National Guard to help police reach residents onroads that haven't been cleared.

Anne Arundel County Public Schools

fficials have not yet decided whether the county's public schools will be open tomorrow, said spokesman Bob Mosier. An announcement is expected later today.
