The city of Bowie is covered by three fire stations staffed by both career and volunteer personnel. The stations include Co. 39 near Free State Mall, Pointer Ridge Co. 43 and Huntington Co. 19.

Prior to July 2005, Cos. 43 and 19 were the only stations in Bowie with full-time career personnel, having converted from an all-volunteer staff due to volunteer staff shortages. Similar volunteer staffing issues arose at Co. 39 and in July 2005 the county assigned full-time career staff to Co. 39.

The proposed plan for an EMS/public safety station along Mitchellville Road near Elder Oaks Boulevard is awaiting final approval from the county’s law office. The new EMS station would have a paramedic unit and basic life support ambulance and would help to address the increasing number of EMS-related calls in the area surrounding Bowie Town Center.

No date has been set to begin construction of the station; however, once the plans receive final approval, construction of the facility is expected to be completed within a year.

According to Bowie Volunteer Fire Department statistics, in 2005, the Bowie stations handled 11,763 calls for service (average of 32 per day), including runs made by the paramedic unit at Co. 43 in Pointer Ridge. Calls handled in 2005 increased by 310 from 2004 totals.


Bowie fire stations
