Saturday's obituaries recognize: Gertrude Foster, John Haller, Martin Jones, David Kelley and David Rogers.

Gertrude Foster

Gertrude Ella Foster of Chester died after a long illness on April 23. She was 87.

Mrs. Foster was born on May 28, 1920. She was the daughter of the late Alonza L. Fleming and Sarah E. Fleming of Cheverly. She married her childhood sweetheart, Gilmer G. Foster, on August 19, 1934. During her married life, she resided in Prince George's County, Edgewater, Queenstown, and since 1992, Chester.

She worked for many years at the H and H Bindery in Washington, D.C., and for her family's automotive business in Prince George's County.

She enjoyed needlework, jigsaw puzzles, country music and family gatherings.

She is survived by her husband of more than 73 years, Gilmer Genster Foster; three sons, Donovan Lee Foster of Edgewater, Eugene Genster Foster of Ocean City and William Preston Foster of Cape Coral, Fla.; three daughters, Irene M. Vanderhoof of Stevensville, Diane Elsie Chisholm of Easton and Bonne May Thuman of Grasonville; 35 grandchildren, 54 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. She was predeceased by three sons, Roy Craig Foster, Dennis Consta Foster and Steven Gilmer Foster Sr.; five sisters, Mary Beall, May Robertson, Annie Murphy, Ida Taylor and Elsie Roland; and one brother, Henry Fleming.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. tomorrow at Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, 106 Shamrock Road in Chester. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Stevensville Cemetery.

John Haller

John Frederick Haller, 78, a resident of Severna Park for over 22 years died at his home on April 25.

Born on February 7, 1930, in Brooklyn, N.Y., he was reared in Garden City, N.Y. He graduated in 1952 from Western Maryland College and earned a Master of Business Administration from Hofstra University in 1954.

Mr. Haller served two years as a 1st Lt. in the U.S. Army, primarily as a staff officer in an ordnance battalion stationed in Frankfurt, Germany. He then began his 25-year banking career in an officer training program at Irving Trust Company on Wall Street in New York City. After 15 years at Tappan Zee National Bank in Nyack, N.Y., he transferred to Chemical Bank in Pelham, N.Y., where he was branch manager until his retirement in 1985.

On Oct. 22 1960, he married Linda Margery Hall of Washington, D.C. Survivors include three daughters, Karen Haller of Lewes, Del., Anne Gowdy of Phoenix and Jennifer Moore of Gilbert of Arizona; one son, John Haller of Albany, N.Y.; one sister, Elizabeth Guthrie, of Vienna, Va.; and seven grandchildren.

Visitation will be at Barranco & Sons Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Highway in Severna Park from 3 to 5 p.m. Monday.

A memorial service at the funeral home will immediately follow the visitation. Interment will be at Cypress Hills Cemetery in Brooklyn, N.Y., at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice of the Chesapeake, 445 Defense Highway, Annapolis, MD 21401.

Martin Jones

Martin L. Jones, 65, Odenton, died of prostate cancer on April 20 at his home.

Mr. Jones was born August 12, 1942, in Georgetown, Ga., to James Bouyer and the late Lily Rebecca Jones.

Mr. Jones was educated in the Georgetown and Miami school systems. He graduated from Miami Northwestern Senior High School in 1960, where he started as a small forward on the school basketball team.

Immediately following graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Army where he served honorably for 22 years. During his military career he served in Stuttgart, Germany, Korea, Fort Monmouth, N.J., and Fort Gordon, Ga. He retired from the Army as an E-8 Master Sergeant promotable to E-9 Sergeant Major. During his career he received such honors as Non-Commissioned Officer of the Quarter and Non-Commissioned Officer of the year.

His hobbies included fishing, cooking and organizing family events. He enjoyed politics, traveling and visiting with family and friends. Although he had many outside interests, his greatest joy came from spending time with his wife Yvonne and his large extended family.

He is survived by his wife, Yvonne Marie McKinney Jones, whom he married Dec. 22, 2003; two daughters, Regina V. Jones of Huntsville, Ala., and Sharon Yolanda Jones of Fairburn, Ga.; three stepchildren, Tracy L. McKinney of Glen Burnie, Kirby J. McKinney of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Demetrius Wells of Annapolis; two sisters, Roxanne Maundrell and Lois Saunders, both of Brooklyn, N.Y.; one brother, Terrance Hector, of Brooklyn; and four grandchildren.

Visitation is from 6:30 to 8 p.m. tomorrow at The First Baptist Church, 31 West. St. The wake is at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the church followed by the funeral at 11 a.m. Internment follows at the Maryland Veterans Cemetery in Crownsville. Arrangements are by Reece and Sons Mortuary, 821 West St.

David Kelley

Pastor David "Pastor Dave" Wayne Kelley, 63, a resident of Arnold since 1946 passed away April 24 of complications from pneumonia at the Washington Hospital Center.

Born December 2, 1942 in Baltimore, he attended Old Arnold Elementary School and was in the first graduating class of Belvedere Elementary School, he attended Annapolis Junior and Senior High School. He was a member of the first graduating class of Severna Park High School in 1961. He also was in the first graduating class of Chesapeake Bible College.

He was employed at Sears for 18 years and also worked in banking and real estate. He was the owner of Magothy River Realty. He began his work in the ministry in 1976 and most currently served as Pastor of Woodland Beach Community Church. He served in the U.S. Army Reserves.

He was elected Mago Vista Man of the Year in 1970. In 1971, he was voted one of the ten most outstanding men by the Annapolis Jaycees. He ran for the house of delegates on the republican ticket in 1982 and in 1986.

In 1983, he successfully led the first petition to have county councilmen by their district. He was raised in the Methodist Church and was an Elder of the New Covenant Church in Arnold. He was ordained through the Church of God of Tennessee. He was the founder Pastor of Emmanuel Church of God in Arnold, and founder of the Mago Vista area athletic league and the United Christian Athletic League. He was active with the Mago Vista Civic Association.

He enjoyed fishing, boating and spending time with his family.

Survivors include his wife, Thelma J. Kelley, whom he married on May 14, 1963; two sons, Gregory K. Kelley of Arnold and Randy D. Kelley of Sharptown; two daughters, Beth K. Fitzgerald and Jennifer Chojnowski both of Seaford, Del.; and seven grandchildren. He is preceded in death by one brother Earl C. Kelley, Jr.

Relatives and friends are invited to Pastor Kelley's Life Celebration from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. tomorrow, at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Woodland Community Church, 1619 Shadyside Drive, Edgewater. Interment is at Hillcrest Cemetery.

David Rogers

David Arnold "Dave" Rogers, 51, a six-year resident of Brooklyn Park and a cleaning business owner, died April 18 at his home after a long illness.

Mr. Rogers was born June 26, 1956, in Nuremburg, Germany, to the late Elliott G. and Dorothy Jean Lindahl Rogers. He attended Glen Burnie High School. He lived in Petersburg, Va., before moving to Brooklyn Park.

He was self-employed through his carpet-cleaning business, Spillage Light.

Mr. Rogers was a member of Jehovah's Witness Kingdom Hall in Glen Burnie.

He enjoyed cooking and gardening, especially banzai plant gardening. He built his own aviary and raised cockatiels, finches and parakeets. He was devoted to his family.

Survivors include his wife of 30 years, Evelyn P. Rogers; one son, David E. Rogers of Brooklyn; one daughter, Sarah Nichole Rogers of Federal Hill; his stepmother, Mathilde Rogers of Glen Burnie; and three sisters, Debora Mays and B.J. Rogers-Crouse of Brooklyn Park and Beverly Rogers-White of Annapolis.

Services and interment are private. Arrangements are by Fink Funeral Home.
