Friday's obituaries recognize: Norma Coleman, Carl Ercoli, William Mason Sr., Wilbur Murray, Roy Phillips, Catherine Piper and Eleanor Rodgers

Norma Coleman

Norma Virginia Fisher Coleman, 77, of Ocean Pines and formerly of Crofton, died April 30 at Wicomico Nursing Home in Salisbury.

 

Mrs. Coleman was born Oct. 14, 1930, in Cumberland to the late Charles W. and Minnie Rowe Fisher. She graduated from Fort Hill High School in Cumberland in 1948.

For many years she was a kindergarten teacher for Sunny Day Christian Pre-School in Cambridge.

Mrs. Coleman was a member of the First Baptist Church of Crofton, where her husband was pastor for over 20 years and is still pastor emeritus. She held various teaching positions in Sunday School and sang in the choir.

She enjoyed oil painting and cross stitching, and she was an avid reader.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Charles Maynard, William and Earl Lee Fisher.

Survivors includes her husband of 58 years, the Rev. M. Brent Coleman; two sons, Jeffrey Brent Coleman of Denver, Colo., and Dr. David Keith Coleman of Boston; one daughter, Brenda Trice of Ocean Pines; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Family and friends may visit from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Curran-Bromwell Funeral Home, 308 High St. in Cambridge, and at 9 a.m. Monday at First Baptist Church of Crofton, 1690 Crofton Parkway.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at the church. Following a luncheon at the church, interment will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer's Association, 209 Milford St., Number C, Salisbury, MD 21804.

Carl Ercoli

Carl Michael Ercoli, 89, a resident of Edgewater for over 50 years, died of complications of pneumonia April 29 at Anne Arundel Medical Center after a month-long illness.

Mr. Ercoli was born April 14, 1919, in Washington, D.C., and was self-employed as a paint contractor.

He served in the Army during World War II, where he received the Good Conduct Medal, Victory Ribbon and the American Theater Ribbon.

He enjoyed boating and fishing.

Survivors include one daughter, Linda Krimstein of Los Angeles; and one sister, Caroline Burrows of Edgewater.

Family and friends may join in the celebration of his life at 1 p.m. tomorrow at Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road in Edgewater. Interment is private.

William Mason Sr.

William Bradley Mason Sr., 80, of Prospect Bay, died peacefully with his family April 22 in his home.

Mr. Mason was born Jan. 15, 1928, in Washington, D.C.

He served in the Navy during World War II.

He was a member of Plumbers Local 5 of Washington, D.C. He was also a member of the Capital Power Boat Association in Washington, where he raced his hydroplane, Billy Boy, throughout the mid-Atlantic region.

A direct descendant of John and Rachel Mason, who owned and occupied Woodlawn Plantation in Alexandria, Va., during the Civil War, he loved the Chesapeake Bay and enjoyed sailing and boating from Bay Ridge in Annapolis.

A private pilot and a member of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, he enjoyed flying for many years. He enjoyed traveling with his wife and loved going on cruises. He often participated in Skeet shooting from the ship's stern and often won the first place trophy.

Survivors include his beloved wife, Arlene Mason; four sons, Stephen, Jonathan, Michael and William Mason Jr.; one brother; two sisters; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Christ Church Parish, Kent Island, 830 Romancoke Road in Stevensville. A reception will follow in the fellowship hall. Arrangements are by Fellows, Helfenbien and Newnam Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Queen Anne's County, 255 Comet Drive, Centreville, MD 21617.

Wilbur Murray

Wilbur Henry Murray, 82, of Annapolis, died of renal failure April 7 in Victoria's Boarding Care nursing home in Vallejo, Calif.

Mr. Murray was born March 11, 1926, in the Skidmore community of Annapolis to the late George and Mary Ida "Mamie" Curry Murray. He was educated in Anne Arundel County Public Schools and served in the Navy.

He was an avid bowler and a member of Friendship Missionary Baptist Church. He was active in the church's Strong Men's ministry and the food pantry. He loved listening to the Gospel and especially enjoyed Bishop T.D. Jakes.

He was preceded in death by seven brothers and three sisters.

His survivors include his wife, Doris Brown Murray; and one brother, William Oliver Murray of Severna Park.

Funeral services were held April 16 in Vallejo. Interment was in the Sacramento Veterans Cemetery in Wilson, Calif.

Arrangements were by Colonial Chapels in Vallejo.

Roy Phillips

The Rev. Roy Phillips, 80, of Chester, died April 30 in his home surrounded by his family.

The Rev. Phillips was born Aug. 6, 1927, in Gumboro, Del., to the late William E. and Mollie L. Foskey Phillips. He graduated from Millsboro High School in 1945. He earned an associate degree from Wesley College in 1952; a bachelor's degree from Washington College in 1954; a bachelor of sacred theology degree from Temple University in 1957; and a master's of sacred theology degree from Crozer Theological Seminary.

He served in the Army at the end of World War II.

He worked at Delmarva Power and Light Company until 1950 and then entered the ministry as a Methodist Clergyman in the Peninsula Conference. He served in Burrsville, Rock Hall, Townsend, Del., Clarksville, Del., Chester and Cambridge, retiring in 1990. In 1997, he became pastor emeritus at Kent Island United Methodist Church.

During the Rev. Phillip's career, he served as a board member on the Board of Childcare, Global Ministries, and Evangelism and on the Peninsula Foundation.

He was a life member of the Kent Island Volunteer Fire Company; chaplain for the Hospice of Queen Anne's, Inc. and Cambridge City Police Department; past chaplain for the Maryland State Police; and served in the Dorchester County Drug and Alcohol Abuse Program.

He was preceded in death by one son, Byron Keith Phillips; one brother, Robert Phillips; and two sisters, Ruth Layton and Doris Tingle.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Thelma Whaley Phillips; two sons, Russell Barry Phillips of Harmony and Jeffrey Craig Phillips of Crapo; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Family and friends may visit from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. today at Kent Island United Methodist Church, 2739 Cox's Neck Road in Chester.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. tomorrow at the church. Arrangements are by Fellows, Helfenbien and Newnam Funeral Home.

Catherine Piper

Catherine "Cathy" Billeaud Piper, 63, a resident of Annapolis since 1991, died of melanoma cancer April 23 at Johns Hopkins University Hospital surrounded by her family after a long illness.

Mrs. Piper was born June 3, 1944, in Alexandria, Va., to the late Willianna Duffy and Joseph Billeaud Jr. She graduated from Bunkie High School in Louisiana in 1962 and attended Dominican College of New Orleans.

She served as a legislative aide to the late Congressman Speedy O. Long of Louisiana, during which time she met her husband. She also worked as an inspector for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms from 1976 to 1995 in St. Louis, Mo., and Baltimore, and retired in 1995.

She then formed Piper, Piper and Associates, a financial security investigation firm.

She loved living in Annapolis and was an avid supporter of her community. As a member of the Arts Council of Anne Arundel County, she coined the name of the "Annie Awards" in 2000, which annually recognizes local artistic achievement. She was a proud member of the Severn Town Club, St. Mary's Catholic Church, the Louisiana State Society and the Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms Association of Retirees. She also volunteered for the Annapolis Opera and Maryland Democratic Party.

She was Ward One Association Block Captain and served as chairman for many fundraising events for local charitable organizations, including Hospice of the Chesapeake and Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts.

She enjoyed gardening, traveling and spending time with her granddaughters.

Survivors include her husband of 41 years, Daniel R. Piper Sr.; one son, Daniel Piper Jr. of San Antonio; two daughters, Ann Taylor of Austin, Texas, and Erin Piper-Ruiz of Annapolis; two brothers, William Billeaud of Mandeville, La., and Richard Billeaud of Austin; one sister, Elizabeth McInnis of Ocean Springs, Miss.; and three granddaughters.

A memorial mass will be offered at 9 a.m. May 17 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 109 Duke of Gloucester St. Arrangements are by Taylor Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Melanoma Research Foundation, 170 Township Line Road, Building B, Hillsborough, NJ 08844.

Eleanor Rodgers

Eleanor Louise Hoover Rodgers, 88, a resident of Crownsville for seven years and previously of Big Run, Pa., died of heart failure April 30 in her home.

Mrs. Rodgers was born July 5, 1919, in Altoona, Pa., where she graduated from high school in 1939.

She worked as a teacher's aide in Prince George's County schools from 1965 to 1981.

She was a member of Paradise Church of Christ in Reynoldsville, Pa., and Glenn Dale Baptist Church. She enjoyed reading, gardening, sewing and cross stitch.

She was preceded in death in January by her husband of 60 years, Robert Martin Rodgers.

Survivors include two daughters, Jenny White of Crownsville and Linda Quay of Frederick; one brother, Bernard Hoover of Altoona; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Family and friends may visit from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Hardesty Funeral Home, 851 Annapolis Road in Gambrills. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. Interment will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery in Suitland.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Chesapeake, 445 Defense Highway, Annapolis, MD 21401.
