Doherty released from London jail
LONDON - Pete Doherty, 28, was released from a London jail today after serving a partial sentence for breaking his probation.

The Babyshambles frontman had served 29 days of a 14-week sentence. It wasn't immediately clear why he was released early.

Mr. Doherty's drug use has frequently landed him in court. Last year, he pleaded guilty to possession of crack cocaine, heroin, ketamine and cannabis, as well as a variety of driving offenses.

Shyamalan: New movie is terrifying

MUMBAI, India - M. Night Shyamalan says his new film, "The Happening," will terrify moviegoers.

"It is an extremely scary movie. This is meant to scare you," the Indian-born director told reporters yesterday. Mr. Shyamalan, 37, was visiting India to receive one of the country's highest civilian awards for his contribution to cinema.

Mark Wahlberg plays a schoolteacher on the run from a natural disaster that threatens the entire world.

"The emotional center of the movie is if you knew you were going to die - that was a fact - what would your conversation be like? What would be the last thing you would say to your loved one?" Mr. Shyamalan said.

He said he likes to cast action heroes and then give them surprising roles.

"They still bring an energy to the movie," said Mr. Shyamalan, who also directed "The Sixth Sense," starring Bruce Willis, and "Signs," starring Mel Gibson.

"The Happening," which also stars Zooey Deschanel, opens June 13 in theaters worldwide.

Scarlett Johansson engaged

LOS ANGELES - Scarlett Johansson and her boyfriend, Ryan Reynolds, are engaged.

The 23-year-old actress and the 31-year-old actor have not set a wedding date, Miss Johansson's publicist, Marcel Pariseau, said yesterday.

Miss Johansson's recent credits include "The Other Boleyn Girl" and "The Nanny Diaries." Mr. Reynolds recently starred in "Definitely, Maybe." He was previously engaged to Alanis Morissette.

$1M in stuff taken from ex-Motown star

DETROIT - Detroit City Council member and ex-Motown star Martha Reeves says thieves broke into her childhood home and stole about $1 million worth of uninsured recording equipment.

Ms. Reeves, 66, says speakers, microphones and karaoke machines were among the items taken Sunday night. She says the backdoor of the house on Detroit's east side was kicked in.

Ms. Reeves says "somebody should have called the police while this was happening."
