NORTH EAST (AP) - Maryland Natural Resources Police want to know how an alleged police impersonator was able to get the authentic state police uniform he was caught wearing in Elk Neck State Forest.
Authorities say Derek Popalis, 56, of Baltimore is charged with two counts of impersonating a police officer. He was arrested Monday after a Natural Resources officer saw him kneeling by his Crown Victoria, a car resembling a state police vehicle.
Police say he was wearing the official trooper uniform and duty belt, along with handcuffs, a nightstick and a starter pistol resembling an official police firearm.
Mr. Popalis also is charged with possession of marijuana and being in a state forest after hours.
