This is one workshop where teens are guaranteed to be climbing the wall - but that's a good thing.
The first-ever Teen Summit on Saturday at Anne Arundel Community College will feature a rock wall, laser tag, other sports activities and a live DJ, but the event has a serious purpose as well: fighting underage drinking and drug abuse.

Mixed in with the entertainment will be a keynote address from motivational speaker Justin Lookadoo and workshops led by two young adults who've battled addictions.

The free summit is just one of several related events sponsored by the county's Local Management Board.

On Friday, two other teen workshops with Mr. Lookadoo are scheduled - one aimed at professionals who work with youth, the other for parents. The professional workshop, called "Beyond the Cutting Edge," will be held from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. in Room 219 of AACC's Cade Center for Fine Arts, and the parenting workshop will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Woods Memorial Presbyterian Church in Severna Park. Organizers said there is also an Annapolis High School assembly earlier in the day on Friday which also features Mr. Lookadoo.

"What we hope to accomplish is to engage not only more teenagers to become involved with (strategies to combat) underage drinking in Anne Arundel County, but also the parents as well," said Gregory Torain, Teen Summit project director at themanagement board.

The summit grew out of regular discussions with a group of teens, called Teens in Partnership, which has been meeting since January. Officials at the management board added the professional and parent workshops.

The summit will coincide with the launch of a new Teens in Partnership Web site, www.teensinpartnership.com, which will list resources for teens. The site also will feature a message board for teens to chat with each other anonymously, and access to a counselor who can respond to online questions.

Registration has already filled for the teen summit, but slots are still available for the professional and parenting workshops.

To register for either of the adult workshops, call the management board at 410-222-7423.
