BALTIMORE - An Orlando, Fla., man has pleaded guilty in connection with what Maryland State Police say was one of their largest recorded heroin seizures on Interstate 95.
Jose Gomez, 41, pleaded guilty yesterday to distributing the drug. He will face at least 10 years in federal prison when he is sentenced in Baltimore in July.
Police say he was driving a van on I-95 in Cecil County when he was stopped for a traffic violation. During a search, about 26 pounds of heroin was found wrapped in plastic in a hidden compartment.
Authorities say the heroin had a street value of more than $1 million.
Coach sentenced for threatening referee
GREENBELT - A youth football coach from East Baltimore has been sentenced to 6 1/2 years in prison for using a loaded gun to intimidate a referee during a game last year in Montgomery County.
Prosecutors say Aaron McCown was an assistant coach during a game last September that was ended early by a referee because of the team's inappropriate behavior.
Authorities say McCown threatened the referee, then went to the parking lot and returned with a bag that contained a pistol loaded with four rounds of ammunition.
No shots were fired.
McCown pleaded guilty in March to a charge of knowingly receiving an explosive, the .45-caliber pistol.
2-month-old baby found injured
BALTIMORE - Baltimore police are waiting to hear from doctors whether the injury to the head of a 2-month-old baby came from a stray bullet.
Family members noticed the boy was injured after shots were fired outside their home in the city's O'Donnell Heights neighborhood. Police haven't ruled out the possibility the baby might have bumped his head as he was being carried to safety.
The shooting happened shortly after 6 p.m. yesterday in the 6100 block of Plantview Way. Police say someone fired several shots and at least penetrated a wall and entered the house.
Police took two young men into custody for questioning soon after the shooting.
Johnson will switch to Obama
UPPER MARLBORO - Prince George's County Executive Jack Johnson says he plans to switch sides and vote for Sen. Barack Obama at the Democratic Party's national convention in August.
Mr. Johnson said he can't in good conscience go to the convention and not support Mr. Obama. He says Hillary Rodham Clinton ran a great campaign but fell short.
Mr. Johnson is not a superdelegate. He is a pledged delegate for Mrs. Clinton, but Maryland Democratic Party spokesman David Paulson says pledged delegates are under no obligation to stick with their candidate.
This is the second time Mr. Johnson has switched sides. He allowed his name to be used as an Obama supporter in December, then endorsed Mrs. Clinton a few days before the Maryland primary in February.
