Thomas Basil
Thomas J. "Turk" Basil, 73, of Tampa, Fla., since 1979 and previously of Annapolis, died of cancer June 11 in his home.
Mr. Basil was born Aug. 25, 1934, in Annapolis to the late Thomas R. and Doris Basil.
He was the co-owner of AdCom Graphics from 1979 to 1990, and worked for Hillborough County, Fla., until 1999, when he retired. He continued to work part-time at Northdale Golf course.
He enjoyed golf, gardening, travel and the University of Florida Gators. He loved animals, especially his basset hounds.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Edward Basil.
Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Linda A. Basil; one brother, Thomas R. Basil Jr. of Pasadena; and one sister, Barbara Powell of Old Town, Fla.
A memorial Mass will be offered at 9 a.m. Wednesday at St. Timothy's Catholic Church, 7512 Lakeshore Road in Lutz, Fla.

Alice Bowen
Alice May Bowen, 81, of Prince Frederick since 2000 and previously of Annapolis, died June 14 at Calvert Memorial Hospital in Prince Frederick.
Mrs. Bowen was born May 22, 1927, in Annapolis. She attended West Annapolis Elementary School and graduated from Annapolis High School in 1944.
She worked for eight years as a telephone operator for the former Chesapeake & Potomac Telephone Co., and was primarily a homemaker after the birth of her children. She moved to Denton in the 1980s.
She was a member of the Calvert Baptist Church and the senior centers in Denton and Prince Frederick.
A hospice volunteer, she liked working with the elderly. She also enjoyed playing cards and cooking, and was an avid reader. She was devoted to her family, and especially loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard A. Bowen Jr., whom she married in 1944.
Survivors include one son, Richard A. Bowen III of Fenton, Del.; four daughters, Cathy L. Carter of Goldsboro in Caroline County, Carol A. Oswald of Huntingtown, Mary E. Bowen of Baltimore and Lori D. Bowen of Edgewater; one foster son, Harry Helwig of Goldsboro; one brother, George Springfield of Joppa; two sisters, Rose Lappo of St. Thomas, Pa., and Louise Feen of Annapolis; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
A memorial visitation will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. tomorrow at Rausch Funeral Home, 8325 Mount Harmony Lane in Owings.
Interment will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Eastern Shore Veterans Cemetery in Hurlock.

Margaret Horak
Margaret M. Horak, 83, a longtime resident of Severna Park, died of complications during treatment for non-hodgkins lymphoma June 15 at Cooley Dickinson Hospital in Northampton, Mass.
Ms. Horak was born Jan. 7, 1925, in Ashflat, Ark.
She moved to Washington, D.C., to work for the FBI during World War II and remained in the mid-Atlantic area for the rest of her life. She was the County Clerk for Charles County, and later worked for the Maryland Historic Trust.
She was a very active member of St. Martin's in the Field Episcopal Church.
Survivors include four daughters, Marjorie Marsh of Severna Park, Bonnie Timmons of Belleair, Fla., Kathleen Yaeger of Murfreesboro, Tenn., and Elizabeth Clarke of South Deerfield, Mass.; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Martin's-in-the-Field Episcopal Church, 375 Benfield Road in Severna Park. Arrangements are by Wrisley Funeral Home.

Mary Minter
Mary Margaret Skeehan Minter, 92, of Annapolis died of complications following surgery June 14 at Ginger Cove.
Mrs. Minter was born Jan. 22, 1916, in Pittsburgh to the Eva and Edward Skeehan. She met her husband in California, and followed him to Naval duty stations in places including California, France, Belgium and at the Naval Academy, where he served as Commandant of Midshipmen and subsequently as Superintendent of the Academy.
Mrs. Minter attended daily Mass at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Annapolis. She was a devoted wife and mother, and her charitable activities included serving with the Navy Marine Corps Relief Society and the Vinson Hall Retirement Community for sea service widows.
She worked nearly two decades for both Meals on Wheels and the Anne Arundel Medical Center gift shop. As a member of the Altar Guild at the Naval Academy in the early 1960s, she also did needlepoint for the chapel kneelers that are still in the Naval Academy chapel.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, retired Vice Adm. Charles S. Minter Jr.
Survivors include two sons, retired Navy Cdr. Charles S. Minter III of Lewes, Del., and the Rev. D. Michael Minter of Ashburn, Va.; one daughter, Meredith Minter Hinkle of Fairfax, Va.; one brother, the Rev. Bill Skeehan of Tulsa, Okla.; one sister, Pat Skeehan King of Tulsa; ten grandchildren; and nine great grandchildren.
A funeral Mass will be offered at 9:30 a.m. June 27 at St. John Neumann Catholic Church, 620 N. Bestgate Road.

Emma Pass
Incorrect information was published in the obituary for Emma Grace Pass, the three-day-old daughter of Mark and Robin Pass of Annapolis, in yesterdays edition of The Capital.
Emma died June 14 in her home.
Virginia Pounds
Virginia Norine Pounds, 82, a life-long resident of Annapolis, died of natural causes June 14 at Anne Arundel Medical Center after a six-year illness.
Mrs. Pounds was born June 9, 1926, in Baltimore and graduated from the former Wiley H. Bates High School in 1944.
She worked as a dietician at Anne Arundel Medical Center for 40 years.
She was a member of Ravens Roosters 35 and JAGSE.
Mrs. Pounds enjoyed gardening and traveling.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Velma "Melvin" Pounds.
Survivors include one son, Melvin R. Pounds of Fort Washington; one daughter, Mattie S. Pounds of Upper Marlboro; three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Family and friends may visit at 9 a.m. Thursday at Fowler United Methodist Church, 816 Bestgate Road. A Christian wake will follow at 10:30 a.m., and funeral services will begin at 11 a.m.
Interment will be in Bestgate Memorial Park. Arrangements are by Reese and Sons Mortuary.
Patricia Salvatore
Patricia Ann Sungenis Salvatore, 71, a resident of Crofton for 20 years and previously of Silver Spring for 15 years, died of natural causes June 14 at Anne Arundel Medical Center.
Mrs. Salvatore was born March 26, 1937, in Philadelphia, to the late Joseph and Lena Sungenis. She graduated from the Academy of Notre Dame in 1955, where she held office in Omega Beta Delta.
She was a retired budget analyst for the University of Maryland at College Park.
She was an avid reader and enjoyed travel, Redskins football, the beach, and debating politics. Her grandchildren were the love of her life.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Salvatore; and one son, Chris Salvatore.
Survivors include one son, Rick Salvatore of Port Republic; one brother, Robert Sungenis of Ormond Beach, Fla.; and four grandchildren.
Interment will be private. Arrangements are by Barranco and Sons Severna Park Funeral Home.

Rudolf Schlesner
Rudolf Schlesner, 70, a resident of Stevensville since 1983, died June 16 in his home.
Mr. Schlesner was born Nov. 3, 1937, in Lagny, France, to the late Rudolf Schlesner and Martha Tepper. He was educated in Germany, where he apprenticed in brick masonry.
He immigrated to the United States in 1960, and settled in Maryland, where he worked for F & S Construction in Baltimore and as a foreman for Baltimore Masonry before retiring in 2000. He worked on several large construction projects, including Orioles Park at Camden Yards, and M & T Bank Stadium.
He was a member of Local 1 of the Bricklayers Union of Virginia, Maryland, and Washington, D.C.
He served in the Army from 1960 until 1967.
He enjoyed crabbing and fishing.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Gertrude Jung.
Survivors include his wife of over 40 years, Ilse Reiser Schlesner of Stevensville; two sons, Rudolf Schlesner Jr. and Timothy R. Schlesner of Denton; and four grandchildren.

Terry Sirois
Terry Sirois, 59, a resident of Davidsonville for 15 years and previously of Ontario, Canada, died of complications of kidney disease and multiple myeloma June 14 at Anne Arundel Medical Center after a two year illness.
Mr. Sirois was born Nov. 10, 1948, in Alberta, Canada, to the late Milton and Gwen Sirois. He earned a doctorate degree from Union Institute and University.
He was a consultant in strategic management, and was the CEO of three different companies.
He was a private pilot, and enjoyed fly fishing, hunting, car racing, cooking and reading.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Sirois; one son, Pierre Sirois of Livonia, Mich.; one daughter, Melanie Sirois of Bethesda; two brothers, Dale Sirois of Marrero, La., and Wayne Sirois of Dundalk; and one sister, Ramona Sirois of Kent, Wash.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at John M. Taylor Funeral Home Chapel, 147 Duke of Gloucester St. Interment will be private.

Bertie Schwartz
Bertie Lee Schwartz, 86, of West River died of natural causes June 15 at Sunrise Assisted Living in Columbia.
Mrs. Schwartz was born March 29, 1922, in Winchester, Va., and graduated from McKinley Technical High School in Washington, D.C., in 1940.
She was the owner and past president of Schwartz Realty Inc. in Deale.
Mrs. Schwartz was a member of the former Luther Place Memorial Church, the National, State and County Associations of Realtors, and Soroptimist International of Annapolis where she served as secretary for 11 years. She was a past member of the Bayside Chapter 114 of the Order of the Eastern Star.
She enjoyed dancing and big band music.
She was preceded in death by her former husband, George G. Heine Sr.; her second husband, Max C. Schwartz, who died in 1970; and her third husband, George W. Robertson, who died in 1989; one brother, Frank Spurr; and one sister, Helen Ann Cox.
Survivors include one son, George G. Heine Jr. of West River; two stepdaughters, Bernadine "Deanie" Benning and Barbara Ann Thompson of Virginia; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Ardell Thomas
Ardell Odessa Thomas, 75, a lifelong resident of Annapolis, died of cancer June 12 in her home after a four-month illness.
Mrs. Thomas was born Dec. 11, 1932, in Annapolis to the late Annie Ardell and John B. Johnson Sr. She attended Stanton Elementary School and graduated from the former Wiley H. Bates High School in 1950. She also attended Virginia State College.
A licensed practical nurse at Anne Arundel Medical Center, she studied nursing in the county and worked for 17 years as a private duty nurse around the county.
She was a foster parent for over 40 years and was the recipient of the Foster Parent of the Year Award. She was also a lifelong member of First Baptist Church of Annapolis, where she was a former member of the senior choir.
She enjoyed traveling, walking a mile daily, and playing bingo with her friends on Tuesday nights.
She was preceded in death by her second husband, Thomas W. Thomas Jr.; and one sister, Olga Cook.
Survivors include her former husband, John Thomas Henderson; four sons, Dwain Thomas of Denton, Dana Thomas of Arnold, Tyrone Brown of Annapolis and Mark Jones of Severn; four daughters, Thomasine Ardell Brown, Denise Odaris Hector, Kim Vanessa Gray and Karen Renee Simms of Annapolis; one brother, John B. "J.B." Johnson Jr. of Baltimore; two sisters, Odaris Jordan of Annapolis and Thelma Elliott of Virginia; 13 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Helen Witte
Helen H. Witte, 86, a resident of Annapolis since 1952, died of complications from congestive heart failure June 15 at Anne Arundel Medical Center.
Mrs. Witte was born Feb. 11, 1922, in New Jersey to the late Maximous and Hasie Paroby Hmily.
She worked as an administrative secretary for the Department of the Navy at North Severn from 1959 to 1986.
She was a member of St. Martin's Evangelical Lutheran Church, and was a past worthy matron of the Annapolis Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star.
She was an avid reader and enjoyed needle and cross stitch.
She was preceded in death in 1991 by her husband, Aaron L. Witte; one brother, John Hmily; and two sisters, Mary Lelet and Anne Fitzin.
Survivors include one son, Aaron L. Witte Jr. of Annapolis; two daughters, Eileen Witte of Baltimore and Virginia Ruth Turner of Green Bay, Wis.; and two grandchildren.
