Tuesday's obituaries recognize: Judith R. Clemson, Albert Johnson, Yolando Goodrum, Della McKnew, Robert Rice, Maurice Scott II, Frank Sessa and Egundo Novoa-Troncoso

Judith R. Clemson

Judith R. Clemson, 78, a resident of Annapolis for three years and previously of Gibson Island, died June 21 at Anne Arundel Medical Center.

Mrs. Clemson was born May 2, 1930, in Richmond, Va., and was raised in Baltimore. She graduated from Girls Latin High School in 1948 and from the former Maryland College for Women in 1952.

A homemaker, she was a member of St. Christopher by the Sea Parish, where she was past president of the Women's Guild. She also served as past president and was a member of many garden clubs, including the Gibson Island Garden Club and the Federated Garden Club of Maryland.

She enjoyed gardening and flower arranging, winning many awards. She also enjoyed travel, cruises and the beach, and was involved in the Blue Star Memorial Highway program.

Survivors include her husband of 54 years, D. Buckey Clemson Sr.; one son, D. Buckey Clemson Jr. of Pasadena; one daughter, Kathryn Verbanic of Gibson Island; one brother, John T. Robertson III of Cambridge; and six grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. tomorrow at St. Christopher by the Sea Church on Gibson Island. Interment is private. Arrangements are by Stallings Funeral Home.

Albert Johnson

Joseph Albert Johnson, 71, a resident of Crownsville for 36 years, died June 21 at Anne Arundel Medical Center.

Mr. Johnson was born Oct. 28, 1936, in Washington, D.C., and graduated from Gonzaga College High School in Washington. He attended The Catholic University of America for one year.

From 1955 to 1959, he worked for the FBI as a fingerprint researcher and identifier. He then worked until 1964 as a salesman for Pepsi-Cola Bottling Co. in Cheverly. He worked from 1964 until his retirement in 1991 for the former Chesapeake & Potomac Telephone Co. as an installer, repairman, data technician, controller of data services and special services technician.

He was a charter member, executive committee member for 40 years, and past secretary, treasurer, vice-president and three-time president of the Woodridge Business Men's Association in College Park.

He also served as vice-president, president and on the board of Governors of the Civic Association of the Palisades in Crownsville. He was the founder and first President of the Generals Highway Council of Civic Associations, a former member of the Anne Arundel County Board of Appeals, a former trustee for the Severn Cross Roads Foundation, and a former member of the Anne Arundel County Economic Development Finance Committee.

Survivors include one son, Timothy J. Johnson of Davidsonville; one daughter, Denise M. Johnson of Crownsville; and three grandchildren.

Family and friends may visit from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Taylor Funeral Home, 147 Duke of Gloucester St.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 28 at the funeral home. Interment will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery in Washington, D.C.

Yolando Goodrum

Yolando "Lanny" Goodrum 55, of Annapolis died June 15 at Anne Arundel Medical Center after a lengthy illness.

Ms. Goodrum was born Aug. 8, 1952, in Annapolis to Mazie Quick and the late Adell Goodrum. She graduated from Annapolis High School in 1970 and attended Bowie State College.

She worked as a special clerk for Verizon for 34 years.

She enjoyed watching football and basketball, playing cards and spending time with family and friends.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Janet Tinker.

Survivors include her companion of 28 years, Joseph Hebron; two children, Juan Johnson and Joland Hebron, both of Annapolis; four brothers, Charles and Robert Goodrum and Carl and Erskin Keller; four sisters, Matilda Golden, Curline Addison, and Thelma and Yvonne Keller; and three grandchildren.

Family and friends may visit at 10 a.m. today at Holy Temple Church, 708 Bestgate Road. Funeral services will follow at 11 a.m. Interment will be in Hillcrest Cemetery, and family and friends will be received immediately following at the American Legion Post home on Forest Drive.

Arrangements are by Reese and Sons Mortuary.

Della McKnew

Della Karpeles McKnew, 91, a resident of Severna Park for eight years and previously of Riviera Beach for 15 years, died of natural causes June 22 at Tate Hospice House in Linthicum.

Mrs. McKnew was born Feb. 17, 1917, in Washington, D.C., where she was also raised. She attended Central High School and earned a bachelor's degree in 1938 from Goucher College. She attended Catholic University Law School and was admitted to the Maryland Bar in 1954. She lived in Laurel for 20 years and Baltimore for 22 years.

She worked as a secretary for the Chinese Purchasing Commission during World War II, then as a secretary and later as a lawyer for the Army Corps of Engineers. She became the District Counsel for the Baltimore District of the Corps of Engineers, and later was promoted to Administrative Judge for the Board of Contract Appeals in Washington, D.C.

She was awarded the Department of the Army's Meritorious Civilian Service Award in 1985, after 37 years of service, and retired to Rivera Beach in 1986.

She was a member of Woods Memorial Presbyterian Church in Severna Park.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Benjamin McKnew; one son, John Cliff McKnew; and one daughter, Jane Cowan McKnew.

Survivors include one son, Benjamin Preston McKnew III of Pasadena; one daughter, Rosemary Mayes of Pasadena; one brother, Leo Karpeles of Crownsville; and four grandchildren.

Family and friends may visit from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. tomorrow at Barranco and Sons Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Highway

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Woods Memorial Presbyterian Church, 611 Baltimore Annapolis Blvd. in Severna Park. Interment will follow in Glen Haven Memorial Park in Glen Burnie.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Chesapeake, 445 Defense Highway, Annapolis, MD 21401.

Robert Rice

Robert Charles "Bob" Rice, 69, of Arnold, died of complications following transplant surgery June 21 at the University of Maryland Pulmonary Transplant Intensive Care Unit after a year-long illness. A full story ran in yesterday's edition of The Capital.

Mr. Rice was born Sept. 23, 1938, in Nevenville, Iowa, and earned bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Northern Iowa and a doctoral degree from Iowa State University.

A former superintendent of Anne Arundel County schools, he was most recently employed as a special assistant to the superintendent for the District of Columbia Public Schools. He was responsible for desegregation while superintendent of St. Charles Parish Public Schools in Louisiana.

Mr. Rice also worked for the Maryland State Department of Education and the Maryland State Board of Education.

He founded the St. Charles Parish Rotary International, and served as commissioner of the Maryland State Ethics Commission.

He enjoyed hunting and fishing, and won the Grand Isle Tarpon Rodeo with the catch of a 436-pound blue marlin.

Survivors include his wife of over 18 years, Betsy R. Rice; his former wife, Susannah L. Rice of Queen Anne; one son, Dr. Robert Todd Rice of Queen Anne; one daughter, Stephanie Rice Weaver of Greensboro, N.C.; one stepson, Mark Fleming of Arnold; one stepdaughter, Rachael Fleming of Arnold; two brothers, Richard Rice of Johnston, Iowa, and Ronald Rice of Des Moines, Iowa; and six grandchildren.

Family and friends may visit from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. tomorrow at Barranco and Sons Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Highway.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Margaret's Episcopal Church, 1601 Pleasant Plains Road.

Maurice Scott II

Dr. Maurice LaRue Scott II, 64, of Centreville died of cancer June 22 in his home after a short illness.

Dr. Scott was born June 26, 1943, in Washington, D.C., to the late Maurice and Doris Scott. He graduated from Suitland High School and earned bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees from the University of Maryland.

He was a retired Prince George's Community College professor.

He served as a commander in the Navy Reserve.

Dr. Scott enjoyed the Chesapeake Bay, especially sailing. He also enjoyed playing with his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Sheridan Scott; one son, Kevin Scott of Arnold; two daughters, Deborah Tomassoni of Centreville and Tracey Armiger of Stevensville; and five grandchildren.

Family and friends may visit from 6 to 8 p.m. tomorrow at Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, 408 South Liberty St. in Centreville. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Interment will be at Woodlawn Memorial Park.

Frank Sessa

Frank Edward Sessa, 85, of Severna Park and formerly of Annapolis died June 17 at Kris Leigh Assisted Living in Severna Park.

Mr. Sessa was born Aug. 27, 1922, in Brooklyn, N.Y., to the late Jerry and Mary Messorocca Sessa. He graduated from James Madison High School in Brooklyn in 1940 and earned a bachelor's degree in accounting from New York University in 1954.

He worked for Cosmopolitan Insurance Co. in New York.

During World War II, Mr. Sessa served in the Army from 1942 to 1945.

He enjoyed reading and watching television.

He was preceded in death in 2004 by his wife of over 50 years, Elizabeth E. Sessa.

Survivors include one son, Kevin Sessa of Louisville, Colo.; three daughters, Jane Marie Sexauer of Arnold, Maryann Towle of Dover, N.H., and Nancy Bragg of Cary, Ill.; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 11 a.m. Friday at St. John Neumann Catholic Church, 620 N. Bestgate Road.

Interment will be in the Maryland Veterans Cemetery in Crownsville. Arrangements are by Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home.

Egundo Novoa-Troncoso

Egundo Camilo "Chick" Novoa-Troncoso, 67, of Annapolis died of lung cancer June 21 at Mandrin Hospice House after a year-long illness.

Mr. Novoa-Troncoso was born March 17, 1941, in Santiago, Chili. He left home when he was 17 to work as a merchant mariner aboard Greek vessels.

Subsequently, he worked as an Annapolis taxicab driver for 30 years.

He enjoyed long walks, old movies, history and politics. He was a coin collector and an avid patriot; he loved to wave flags.

Family and friends may visit from 6 to 8 p.m. tomorrow at Hardesty Funeral Home, 12 Ridgely Ave.

Graveside services will be held at noon Thursday in Cedar Hill Cemetery in Suiteland.
