Today's obituaries recognize: Reginald Ball, Ellen Caprio, Ann Driscoll, Marie Durner, Irene Holt, Lacey McKinney, Robert Schied and Victor Size.

Reginald Ball

Reginald J. Ball, Sr., 86, of Odenton, died after a lengthy illness July 2 at the Greater Laurel Hospital.

Mr. Ball was born Oct. 22, 1922, in St. Indigoes. He was honorably discharged from the Army in 1944 after serving in France and the Korean War. He retired from the General Services Administration at the National Security Agency in 1970. He was an active member of Macedonia U.M. Church. He was a loyal Baltimore Orioles fan.

He was preceded in death by six brothers, James, Archie, Joseph, Swope, Benjamin and John Ball; and three sisters Janie, Florence and Carrie Ball.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Mamie A. Ball; one son, Reginald H. Ball Jr.; one daughter, Linda A. Powell (McCoy); one sister, Mildred Myers; one brother, Richard Ball; three grandchildren; and seven great- grandchildren.

A viewing will be held from 9 to 11 a.m., followed by a Christian Wake at 10:30 a.m. tomorrow at Macedonia U.M. Church, 1657 Sappington Branch Road, Odenton.

A funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. Interment is in the Maryland Veterans Cemetery in Crownsville.

Arrangements are by Reese and Sons Mortuary, 821 West Street.


Ellen Caprio

Ellen W. Caprio, 68, a longtime resident of Severna Park, died of cancer June 27 at her home.

Ms. Caprio was born May 29, 1940, in Hollywood to the late Raymond and Virginia Wible.

She worked in Sinai Hospital's Hematology laboratory in 1992, then transferred to the Kreiger Eye Institute where she began working for the chief of opthomology.

Playing tennis, golf and bridge were her passions; she became a life master bridge player.

She married Samuel J. Caprio in 1960, and the couple divorced in 1990.

Survivors include one daughter, Julie M. Caprio of Severna Park; one son, David S. Caprio of Severna Park; one sister, Veronica Yeatman of Bethesda; and one brother, Ken Wible of Leonardtown.

A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday at Ruck Towson Funeral Home, 1050 York Road.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Sinai's Kreiger Eye Institute, 2411 W. Belvedere Ave., Baltimore, MD 21215


Ann Driscoll

Ann M. Driscoll, 71, a resident of Annapolis and previously of Baltimore and Sacramento, Calif., died of natural causes July 3 at her home.

Born Aug. 4, 1936, in New York City, she was a graduate of Sacred Heart Academy in New York. Her hobbies included playing Scrabble at the Annapolis Senior Center.

She is survived by her brother, Robert Driscoll of Washington, D.C.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are by Kalas Funeral Home.

Marie Durner

Marie Angel Durner, 92, a resident of Crownsville and formerly of Pasadena, died July 4 at the Fairfield Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Mrs. Durner was born Nov. 22, 1916, in Baltimore to the late Samuel and Marie G. Angel.

She graduated from Glen Burnie High School as the first to receive her diploma in the first graduating class of 1933 and coordinated all of the reunions for 50 years. She and her husband, the late Marvin A. Durner, whom she married in 1957, owned and operated Angels Food Market in Pasadena until 1960.

She served as a judge for the Orphans Court from 1984 to 1994 and was chief judge from 1986 to 1994.

Mrs. Durner was a realtor and broker from 1962 to 1984 and co-founded Severna Park Realty and South Shore Realty.

She co-founded the Anne Arundell County Historical Society and served as editor of the History Notes from 1962 to 1991. She was also co-founder of Severn Cross Roads Foundation and the Ladies Auxiliary of the Lake Shore Fire Department. She was a member of Our Lady of the Fields Church in Millersville.

Her hobbies included reading, antiques and yard sales.

Survivors include four sons, John Durner of Durham, N.C., Robert Durner of Glen Burnie, Samuel Durner of Denton and Lawrence Durner of Towson; one daughter, Joann Sim of Annapolis; one brother, Robert Angel of Sea Level, N.C.; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Visitation is from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow at the Stallings Funeral Home, 3111 Mountain Road, Pasadena. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Our Lady of the Fields Catholic Church, Cecil Ave. in Millersville.

Interment follow at Meadowridge Cemetery in Elkridge.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Anne Arundell County Historical Society, P.O. Box 385, Linthicum, MD 21090.


Irene Holt

Irene Fletcher Holt, 90, of Harwood, died after a lengthy illness July 3 at her home.

She was born Sept. 15, 1917, in Prince George's County.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, James Harrison Holt; and one son, Bruce Seville Holt.

Survivors include three daughters, Agnes Louise Fletcher, Geraldine Elizabeth Smith and Carol Chaney Holt; two sons, James Harrison Holt III and Forrest Reginald Holt Sr.; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.

Family and friends will honor her life Tuesday at St. Mary's of the Assumption Catholic Church, 14908 Main St. in Upper Marlboro. Family hours are from 10 to 11 a.m., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m.

Interment will be at Adams United Methodist Church Cemetery, 937 Bayard Road in Lothian. Arrangements are by Reese & Sons Mortuary, 821 West St.


Lacey McKinney

Lacey McKinney, 86, a resident of Glen Burnie, died July 1 at his son's home in Baltimore.

Mr. McKinney was born April 26, 1922, in Renfroe, Ala., to the late Johnnie McKinney Sr. and Mary Florence Mann. He was educated in the public schools in Talladega, Ala.

He joined the Navy and settled in Annapolis. He later became a civil service employee at the Naval Academy as a barber before retiring after thirty years.

He was an active member of St. Philip's Episcopal Church. He served as chairman of the Philippians, member of the usher board, communion steward, member of the committee to select the minister, chairman of the vestry, member of the men's club, sang on the choir and once served as chairman of the finance committee.

Mr. McKinney was handy around the house and enjoyed all sports, especially fishing.

He owned Kinney's Beauty Salon, which closed many years ago. Mr. McKinney was active in the community, serving local civic organizations such as the NAACP, Universal Lodge of Free Masonry and the Annapolis Delgents.

He was a drum major for justice; he was among the first to protest and march outside of Dick Poole's and the old segregated bus station then located at the site of the Loews Hotel on West Street. He was among those honored as pioneers in the local civil rights movement against segregation in Annapolis.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Darthula Cook.

Survivors include his wife, Geraldine McKinney; one daughter, Sharon McKinney Mackell; two sons, Kirby Joseph McKinney Sr. and Renault William McKinney; two stepchildren, Chrystal Doolittle and Leah Boston; six brothers, Blenton, Johnnie Jr., Leroy, Frank, Dorsey and Charles McKinney; three sisters, Pearl Scales, Louise Scale, and Ruby Cole; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren,

A viewing and Christian Wake will be from 6 to 9 p.m. tomorrow at the Reese & Sons Mortuary, 821 West St. The family will receive visitors from 7 to 9 p.m.

A public viewing is from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Tuesday, followed by the funeral at 11 a.m. at St. Philips Episcopal Church, 730 Bestgate Road.

Interment will be at 1 p.m. at the Maryland Veterans Cemetery in Crownsville.


Robert Schied

Robert George "Bob" Schied, 68, a resident of Annapolis for 37 years, died of emphysema June 29 at Anne Arundel Medical Center.

Born Jan. 17, 1940, in Detroit, Mich., Mr. Schied grew up in Jackson and Traverse City, Mich., and received his bachelor's of science degree from Ferris State University in 1964. He worked his way through college as a disc jockey at a local radio station and never lost his love of music.

He served in the Air National Guard during the Vietnam era. He moved to Washington, D.C., in 1965 to work for Motorola, Inc., working various sales and sales management positions at different locations for over 20 years.

He received his MBA from George Washington University in 1974. Mr. Schied retired after 33 years in sales and sales management in the communication and telecommunications industries.

He loved boating and being on the water. He also loved roses, playing the piano and the Washington Redskins.

He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, the Fleet Reserve Club and the Epiphany Catholic Community of Annapolis.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Aline Schied.

Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Bernadette R. Schied; two daughters, Hope McMichael of Ashburn, Va., and Joy Nelson of Charleston, S.C.; one brother, Edward Schied of Lansing, Mich.; and five grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Hardesty Funeral Home, 12 Ridgely Ave. Funeral services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's Church, 109 Duke of Gloucester St.

Interment is at the St. Mary's Church Cemetery on West Street.


Victor Size

Victor Howard Size, 51, of Stevensville and formally of Bladensburg, died July 1 at the Anne Arundel Medical Center.

Mr. Size was born Jan. 31, 1957, in Washington, D.C., and was the son of Al and Gerry Size of North Beach.

He worked for the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority as a emergency management officer and fire life safety liaison where he was instrumental in providing significant training programs and hands-on learning experiences involving subway operations to over 15,000 emergency services personnel locally and worldwide.

He served as a member of the Washington Metropolitan Area Council of Governments Passenger Rail Safety Subcommittee and mentored mass transportation experts from Israel, Malaysia, Korea, Puerto Rico, Thailand, Denmark and the United Kingdom.

Mr. Size was a life member of the Marlboro Volunteer Fire Department and served as fire chief for the department for over 20 years before relocating to Stevensville, where he served with the United Communities Volunteer Fire Department, fulfilling his second term as fire chief. He held numerous training and educational certifications relative to his fire service career and his work with the transportation industry.

Mr. Size served as a field instructor with the Maryland Fire and Rescue Institute at the University of Maryland in College Park. He also worked for the Maryland State Firemen’s Association, the Maryland Fire Chiefs Association and the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation.

Survivors include his wife of 14 years, Laurie Size; four daughters, Carrie Size of Laurel, Traci Hajducsek of Odenton, Jamie Size of Laurel and Tiffany Brett, currently serving in Iraq; one son, Adam Zell of Stevensville; two sisters, Victoria Baxter of Chesapeake Beach and Vinny Dodson of Burke, Va.; and one grandchild.

A viewing will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Robert E. Evans Funeral Home, 16000 Annapolis Road in Bowie, with a Fire Department Memorial Service at 8 p.m.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. tomorrow at the Sacred Heart Church in Bowie. Interment will follow at the Lakemont Memorial Gardens in Davidsonville.

A reception will follow at the Kent Island Elks Lodge in Stevensville.
