Tuesday's obituaries recognize: Charles Clark, Stanley McCann, James Monaghan, David Roese, Gary Sappington, Kristen Trader and Carol Yackel

Charles Clark 

Charles Melvin Clark, 86, of Stevensville died July 12 at Anne Arundel Medical Center.

Mr. Clark was born May 15, 1922, in Stevensville to the late Thomas B. and E. Amelia Clark.

He began working at an early age as a waterman. After World War II, he worked as a project manager in commercial and industrial construction for the Daiger Corp. in Lutherville. He also operated his own business in Stevensville building tongs, live boxes, and crab nets for local watermen.

He served in the Army During World War II, from 1943 to 1946, in Company A, 594th Engineer Boat and Shore Regiment.

Mr. Clark was a member of the Kent Island Heritage Society, American Legion Post 278, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7464, National World War II Memorial, Attack Boats Association, and Camp Gordon Johnston Association. He was an honorary lifetime member of the Kent Island Volunteer Fire Department.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Alma Catherine Schepers Clark, whom he married in 1943; and one brother, Thomas Vernon Clark.

Survivors include two sons, William Melvin Clark and Paul Charles Clark of Stevensville; one sister, Mary Leona Smith of Stevensville; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Family and friends may visit from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. tomorrow at Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, 106 Shamrock Road in Chester.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Interment will follow in Stevensville Cemetery.

Stanley McCann

Stanley E. "Stan" McCann, 93, of Annapolis died July 11 after a brief illness.

Known also as ''Mac,'' Mr. McCann was born Oct. 18, 1914, in Scriba, N.Y., to the late Earl William and Bessie E. McCann. He earned a degree in industrial arts from Oswego State University in New York.

He taught in New York before World War II. Later, he worked for General Electric in Syracuse, N.Y., where he started in technical support for the armed services and progressed through a variety of positions of increasing responsibilities in training, recruiting and human resources and moved to Mississippi and then Maryland.

He retired after 33 years, but continued working as a service technician with the Suburban Service in Crofton, where he was the in-house expert on electronic air filters and cleaners.

Mr. McCann served as a radar technician on tankers in the Navy during World War II.

After his retirement, he started substitute teaching and volunteering for the Red Cross and Meals-On-Wheels. He also became very active in Kiwanis and the Toastmasters in Crofton.

He loved to build and work with his hands on projects. Recently, he enjoyed golf, bridge, square dancing and traveling throughout the world.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Dorothy Jane Gleason McCann; and one sister, Ruth Battles.

Survivors include his companion of 12 years, Charlotte Gilchrist; one son, William McCann of Binghamton, N.Y.; one daughter, Judith McCann of Locust Grove, Va.; four grandsons; and nine great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at Calvary United Methodist Church, 301 Rowe Blvd. A reception and luncheon will follow.

Interment will be in Oswego at a later date. Arrangements are by Kalas Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions may be made in lieu of flowers to the Heritage Harbour Health Group, 801 Compass Way, Annapolis, MD 21401 or to the Memorial Fund at Calvary United Methodist Church, 301 Rowe Blvd., Annapolis, MD 21401.

James Monaghan

James C. Monaghan Sr., 87, of Annapolis and previously of Pasadena, died July 13 in his home.

Mr. Monaghan was born Dec. 13, 1920, in Baltimore to the late James and Mary Monaghan. He attended parochial schools and the University of Maryland.

He owned a contracting business in Riviera Beach, helped bring the Commercial Bank to Pasadena and served on the board of directors for North Arundel Savings Bank.

He served as the leadership training chairman for the Boy Scouts, taught with the Red Cross and helped establish Little League in Riviera Beach. He served as president of the Community Association, the East Anne Arundel Lions Club, and the local Master Plumbers' Association.

He was appointed to the County Plumbing Commission, helped open the Center for Applied Technology North, and served as chairman of the construction department. He taught for the Associated Builders and Contractors, was active in St. Andrew by the Bay Catholic Church, served as a coordinator for Chores and More and was a member of the Knights of Columbus.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Vera Wiebking; three brothers, Joseph, Richard and Gerald Monaghan; and two sisters, Eileen Rouse and Mary Monaghan.

Survivors include his second wife, Gertrude Cermak; two sons, Deacon James Monaghan of Annapolis and Patrick J. Monaghan of Baltimore; one daughter, Martha Monaghan of Annapolis; two stepsons, Danny and Jimmy Cermak; four stepdaughters, Peggy Castignola, Marie Truffer, Joan Cade and Karen Emge; two brothers, Donald and Paul Monaghan of Baltimore; two sisters, Mary de Lourdes Monaghan of Baltimore and Patricia Robb of El Paso, Texas; five grandchildren; seven stepgrandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Family and friends may visit from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today and tomorrow at Barranco and Sons Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Highway.

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Andrew by the Bay Catholic Church, 701 College Parkway in Annapolis. Interment will be at 11 a.m. Friday in New Cathedral Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice of the Chesapeake, 445 Defense Highway, Annapolis, MD 21401 or to St. Andrew by the Bay Church, 701 College Parkway, Annapolis, MD 21409.

David Roese

David Whittier Roese, 82, of Catonsville and previously of Severna Park for 18 years, died July 6 at Centreville Hospice House.

Mr. Roese was born Nov. 24, 1925, in Wilkinsburg, Pa., to the late John A. "Jack" Roese and Edith Adelane Hobe Roese. He graduated from Ben Avon High School and Allegheny College and attended Johns Hopkins University.

He worked for Westinghouse Electric Corp. from 1947 until he retired in 1992. He was a special engineer and later a project manager, and was among those employees who staffed the new Maryland branch. He earned many awards and patents, and worked on gyroscopes, the Gemini and Apollo space programs, the Lunar Landing Module Hook-up and Doppler and Portable Ground Field Radar.

He volunteered for Maryland Public Television and his son's Cub Scout troop, and was an active member of the Catonsville and Severna Park United Methodist churches. He helped build a prayer chapel at the Severna Park church, and was vice chairman of fundraising to build the Western YMCA in Catonsville.

He was a past president of the National Exchange Club and ran the Catonsville Model Rocket Club. He was also a member of Catonsville Cotillion Dance Group and several bridge groups and supported the Annapolis Brass Quintet.

He enjoyed travel, sailing, boating and camping. He especially enjoyed Assateaque Island State Park.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen M. Stenstrom Roese.

Survivors include one son, Craig Roese of Catonsville; two daughters, Karen Roese of Catonsville and Cassandra R. Fedas of Chestertown; one brother, Paul Roese of Naples, Fla.; and one sister, Jean Phelps of Pittsburgh.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. tomorrow at Great Oak Manor Bed and Breakfast, 10568 Cliff Road in Chestertown.

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Lake View Memorial Park, 2724 Liberty Road in Sykesville. Arrangements are by Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions may be made in lieu of flowers to the Hospice of Queen Anne's County, 255 Comet Drive, Centreville, MD 21617 or to the Mosaic Community Rehabilitation, 20 Winters Lane, Catonsville, MD 21228.

Gary Sappington

Gary Edward Sappington, 49, of North Hollywood, Calif., and previously of Davidsonville, died of natural causes July 4 in his home.

Mr. Sappington was born Nov. 7, 1958, in Maryland to Elmer H. and Patricia L. Sappington of Davidsonville.

A former Marine, he worked for 25 years as a maintenance engineer.

Survivors include one daughter, Emily Nicole Sappington of Houston; and one sister, Deborah Di Marino of Frederick.

Kristen Trader

Kristen Jeanne "Kris" Trader, 44, a lifelong resident of Severna Park, died unexpectedly July 11 in her home.

Ms. Trader was born Nov. 27, 1963, in Baltimore to Patricia Trader and the late John F. "Jack" Trader. She graduated from Severna Park High School in 1981.

She worked for the last six years as store manager for Cosmoprof, a wholesale beauty products supply company.

She was active in American Legion Post 175 and Elks Lodge 2608.

She enjoyed gardening and entertaining family and friends, and loved her cats and dogs.

She was preceded in death by one brother, John K. Trader; and one sister, Laura Jeanne Trader.

Survivors include her longtime companion, Scott Bullen; one daughter, Jessi Hall of Severna Park; her step-father, Charles Burke of Edgewater; and two brothers, Ken Trader of Boise, Idaho, and Scott Trader of Arnold.

A memorial service will be held at noon Thursday at Chesapeake Christian Fellowship Church, 377 West Central Ave. in Davidsonville. Interment will be private. Arrangements are by Barranco and Sons Severna Park Funeral Home.

Carol Yackel

Carol Yackel, 71, of Deale, and formerly of Long Island and Afton, N.Y., died of lung disease June 21 at Anne Arundel Medical Center after a long illness.

Mrs. Yackel was born April 21, 1937, in Maspeth, N.Y.

She and her husband owned Shore Isle Marina in Seaford, N.Y., and later owned Little Hill Farm in Afton.

In Maryland, she enjoyed spending Wednesday nights at the Deale Elks Lodge 2528 for "Taco Night." She was an avid fan of the Washington Capitals, enjoyed a trip to Niagara Falls and made many friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Charles Yackel.

Survivors include two sons, Eric and Karl Yackel; three daughters, Elizabeth Irvin, Barbara Gocinski and Sandra Macfarlane; one brother, Leonard Crawford; 12 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Interment will be at 10:30 a.m. July 25 in Long Island National Cemetery in Farmingdale, N.Y.
