Thursday's obituaries recognize: Mary Barlock, John Bush, Dean Carlson, William Dodson, Maryland Guare, Robert Haygood, Edward Paquette and Eugene Wugofski.

Mary Barlock

Mary Jane Barlock, 65, of Severna Park and previously of Pasadena, died July 7 at Anne Arundel Medical Center.

Mrs. Barlock was born June 30, 1943, in Annapolis to the late Charles and Louise Derringer Gerkin.

She began working as a systems analyst for the Social Security Administration when she was 17, and continued until she retired.

She loved taking cruises, spending time with her family and participating in a good debate.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ronald J. Barlock; and one brother, Johnny Gerkin Jr.

Survivors include one daughter, Tina M. Morris of Severna Park; one brother, Charles Gerkin Jr. of Arnold; five sisters, Gloria Trapp, Darlene Call, Helena Davies and Lee Demota of Glen Burnie and Bee Hannon of Liberty, Maine; and three grandchildren.

Funeral services and interment are private. Arrangements are by Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Arthritis Foundation, P.O. Box 96280, Washington, D.C. 20090-6280.

John Bush

John Paul Bush, 55, of Salem, Va., and previously of Harwood, died of cardiac disease July 7 in Lewis-Gale Hospital in Salem with his wife by his side.

Mr. Bush was born Oct. 3, 1952, in Oak Hill, W.Va., to the late Bonnie Ethel Sheppard and Ivan Hayes Bush Jr. He graduated from Greenbrier Military Academy in 1972.

He worked as a CNA, specializing in the care of the elderly.

He enjoyed photography, fishing, reading and gemology. He also loved nature and his dog and cat.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Ivan H. Bush III; and one sister, Penny Bush.

Survivors include his wife of 34 years, Elizabeth Bridgman Bush; two sons, Rory David Bush of Ceillac, France, and Samuel Lee Bush of Salem; his stepmother, Elizabeth "Betty" Bush of Oak Hill; two brothers, Steve Bush of Oak Hill and Michael Bush of Mason, Ohio; one sister, Ginny Rosiek of Oak Hill; and two grandchildren.

A private service will be held at his wife's family farm in Harwood. Arrangements are by Oakey and Sons Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the Coronary Care Unit Nurses' Station, Lewis-Gale Hospital, 1900 Electric Road, Salem, VA 24153.

Dean Carlson

Dean Mills Carlson, 41, a lifelong resident of Annapolis, died of heart failure July 14 in his home.

Mr. Carlson was born March 16, 1967, in Karlsruhe, Germany, to retired Army Col. Dean M. Carlson and Elke Louisa Carlson of Melbourne, Fla. He graduated from Annapolis High School in 1985 and attended Anne Arundel Community College for two years.

He was most recently employed at Ruth's Chris Steak House in Eastport. Previously, he worked as Applebee's mid-Atlantic regional manager for 10 years.

He was a competitive swimmer for the Naval Academy Junior Team, and loved playing Dungeons and Dragons and with a Rubik's Cube. He also enjoyed deep sea fishing, golf, the Golden Tee arcade game, car racing, cooking, skiing, billiards, softball and spending time with his friends. Most of all, he loved music.

Survivors include his fiance, Susan Clasen, and her children; and one sister, Kirstin B. Carlson of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.

A celebration of his life will be held at noon Saturday at Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road in Edgewater. Interment is private.

William Dodson

William Thomas Dodson, 94, a resident of Eastport for 62 years, died of natural causes July 14 at Easton Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Dodson was born Feb. 23, 1914, in Olivet.

He worked as a waterman on Solomon's Island, then for Trumpy Boat Yard, GibsonIsland Marina and Wilkins Boat Yard.

He enjoyed sailing.

He was preceded in death by his wife of over 60 years, Etheylyn Daniels Dodson; one son, William T. Dodson Jr.; three brothers, Eugene, Sherman and Willis Dodson; and one sister, Aubrey Miller.

Survivors include one sister, Eileen Gambke of Richmond, Va.; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Family and friends may visit at 10 a.m. Saturday at Hardesty Funeral Home, 12 Ridgely Ave. Funeral services will follow at 11 a.m. Interment will be in Hillcrest Memorial Gardens.

Maryland Guare

Maryland Lucille Guare, 91, a lifelong resident of Annapolis, died of renal failure July 16 at Annapolitan Assisted Living after an illness lasting five years.

Mrs. Guare was born March 26, 1917, in Annapolis and graduated from Annapolis High School.

She worked in the Department of Assessments and Taxations for the State.

She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of West Annapolis Fire Department and St. Anne's Episcopal Church.

Mrs. Guare enjoyed needlework.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Alvin Guare; three brothers, Alfred, Harold and Bernard Parkinson; and one sister, Dolores Root.

Survivors include two sons, Douglas Guare of Stevensville and James Guare of Annapolis; one daughter, Joan Cammarata of Annapolis; one brother, Wayne Parkinson of Washington, D.C.; two sisters, Ethel Sadler and Anita Skordas of Annapolis; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Family and friends may visit from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. tomorrow at Hardesty Funeral Home, 12 Ridgely Ave.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Interment will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Robert Haygood

Robert H. Haygood, 82, of Annapolis, died July 14 at Anne Arundel Medical Center.

Mr. Haygood was born Jan. 26, 1926, in Mason, Ga., to the late Ray and Venetta Haygood. He attended Hudson High School in Macon and earned a bachelor's degree from South Carolina State College, a master's degree from the University of Maryland and completed graduate studies at New York University.

He taught industrial arts education at Savannah State College and later in county schools. Following his retirement, he worked as a vocational rehabilitation counselor, a substitute teacher and director of playgrounds for Annapolis.

He served in the Army for two years.

He was a dedicated member of First Baptist Church of Annapolis and served as a deacon. He was also active in many committees, the choir and Sunday School.

He was a charter member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., and was committed to serving his community, including with Connecting Links of Annapolis and the Banneker Douglas Museum.

He was preceded in death by one son, Robert Haygood Jr.; and one brother, Horace Haygood.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Emily Haygood; one son, Larry Jackson; two brothers, Roy and Lawrence Hagood; and two sisters, Delores H. Ross and Velma H. Taylor.

A Christian wake will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church of Annapolis, 31 West Washington St. A funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. Interment will be at 10 a.m. Monday in the Maryland Veterans Cemetery in Crownsville.

Arrangements are by Reese and Sons Mortuary.

Edward Paquette

Edward Lawrence "Ted" Paquette, 58, of Severna Park, died of injuries sustained in a car accident July 15 at the University of Maryland Trauma Center. A full story ran in yesterday's edition of The Capital.

Mr. Paquette was born Jan. 14, 1950, in South Weymouth, Mass., to Germaine Paquette of Port St. Lucie, Fla. He graduated from the University of New Hampshire in 1972.

He was the CEO of Refractory Composites, Inc., an aerospace materials manufacturer. An engineer, he also held positions with Pfizer, Atlantic Research and T.A.N.T.

He was very involved with the Woods Presbyterian Church and the Fair Oaks Community Association, and gave much of his time to the Severna Park High School Band Boosters Association.

He loved his family and friends, sailing and the water.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Kathleen Gail Butterfield.

Survivors include his second wife, Margaret Humphrey; three sons, Daniel Paquette of Detroit, Mich., Aaron Paquette of Baltimore and Nathan Paquette of Severna Park; two brothers, David Paquette of Plymouth, Mass., and Ernie Paquette of Nashville, Tenn.; and two sisters, Charlene Estes of Stuart, Fla., and Suzanne Broderson of Savannah, Ga.

A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. tomorrow at Woods Presbyterian Church, 611 Baltimore Annapolis Blvd. in Severna Park.

Eugene Wugofski

Eugene "Wugo" Theodore Wugofski, 72, a resident of Annapolis for over nine years and previously of Silver Spring for 29 years, died of chronic heart problems and diabetes in his home after a seven-year illness.

Mr. Wugofski was born Sept. 23, 1935, in Philadelphia to the late Theodore E. and Jean Wugofski. He received a bachelor's degree in 1957 from University of Pennsylvania and did graduate work at University of Maryland and University of Oklahoma.

He was president of both Pacific Sierra Research Corp., Inc. and ERIM (Environmental Research, Inc.-Michigan) at Ann Arbor, retiring in 2001.

He served as a lieutenant colonel in the Army in Bad Tolz, Germany; Okinawa, Japan; and Ft. George G. Meade, Ft. Bragg and Arlington Hall. He served in both the Vietnam War and the Korean Conflict and was awarded the bronze star, Joint Service Commendation medal with Oak Leaf Cluster and the Meritorious Service medal. He retired from the military in 1982.

He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Annapolis and the Severna Park Bridge Club.

He enjoyed bridge, boating and the Washington Redskins, and played the saxophone and sang in a band in college.

Survivors include his wife of over 40 years, Caroline E. Wugofski; two sons, Theodore D. Wugofski of Ft. Worth, Texas, and Timothy E. Wugofski of Gaithersburg; one sister, Carolyn Peffley of Philadelphia; and four grandchildren.

A memorial Mass will be offered at 12:45 p.m. Oct. 8 at Ft. Myer Chapel at Arlington National Cemetery. Arrangements are by Kalas Funeral Homes.
