A man was severely beaten with sticks, a grocery cart and a flower pot during a robbery outside an Edgewater supermarket earlier this month, county police said.
A teenage girl and 18-year-old man were charged with the crime last week after a detective recognized the duo in footage captured on a surveillance camera outside the Giant Food store at 3131 Solomons Island Road.
Police got a panicked phone call from the 46-year-old victim in the early morning hours of July 3, saying a group of people were threatening him in the supermarket parking lot, said Sgt. John Gilmer, a county police spokesman.
As police made their way to the Giant, they got a second call from an employee of the grocery store saying a man had been badly beaten and needed medical assistance, Sgt. Gilmer said.
Just after 3 a.m., officers pulled into the parking lot and found the man in a grassy median of the lot. He told officers his attackers struck him repeatedly with sticks, a grocery cart and a flower pot and stole his cell phone and wallet.
He had serious head trauma and other critical injuries, said Battalion Chief Matthew Tobia, a county Fire Department spokesman. The man, who police are not identifying for his safety, was flown to Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore. He has since been released and is recovering, police said.
Detectives checked out footage on the grocery store's surveillance camera that showed the robbery, and a clear picture of the two attackers. A detective at the Southern District station recognized the teenage girl and man in the footage. The victim positively identified his attackers when police showed their mug shots in a picture line up.

A 15-year-old girl was charged as a juvenile with first-and second-degree assault, robbery and reckless endangerment. She has been placed at the Waxters facility by the Department of Juvenile Services, police said.
