Dress stolen
A man stole a dress Saturday from Bailey's Maryland Avenue, city police said.
The store owner told police that a man and woman came in at about 4:40 p.m. The woman tried on clothing and asked the owner to get her a different size, and the man took a dress off its hanger and put it inside his pants, police said.
When the owner confronted the man and told him she was calling the police, the pair left the store quickly and got into a light grey Mercedes Benz, police said.
The dress was valued at $290.
Police said the thief was described as a black man, 35 to 40 years old, 5 feet 7 inches tall, 140 pounds. He was wearing a white sports shirt and black, baggy dress pants.
Attempted theft
A man tried to get away with about $70 worth of tools Sunday from the Advance Auto Parts at 2019 West St., city police said.
An employee told police that at 2:30 p.m. he saw a man walk around the store, put merchandise into a black bookbag and walk out of the store.
The employee went outside to stop the man. After a brief struggle, the stolen items fell out of the man's bag and he ran away, police said.

Someone broke into a home on Chesapeake Avenue Friday and stole money, city police said.
The victim told police he left his home briefly from 7:30 to 7:50 p.m. The burglar used a 5 gallon bucket to step up to a window, push in an air conditioner and get inside the home, police said.
