Annapolis

Davidsonville
Published August 04, 2008

The county has denied the Annapolis Triathlon permits required for its bike race next month.

A letter to triathlon officials said county police and traffic engineering "determined that the bike race route would unduly disturb the safety and convenience of the public. Therefore ... the license cannot be issued." But race organizers still have another option - they can submit an alternative.

The parade license was but one of the permissions triathlon organizers were required to secure.

Race officials, reacting to traffic woes after last year's race, moved the planned Sept. 7 event out to Sandy Point State Park, where swimming and running contests would be held this year. The bicycle race portion of the competition was scheduled to wind its way through St. Margarets into Annapolis, out Route 2 to College Parkway and back to Sandy Point.

But like the aftermath of last year's race when Annapolis churches complained that the race hindered church traffic, county churches complained that this year's Sunday morning race would interfere with their parishioners' access to church services.

Race organizers could not be reached for this story.

Inspections and Permits Director Betty Dixon, who signed the letter informing race officials the permit was denied, said the size of the race and its protracted time frame raised safety issues.

"Both our police and traffic engineering staff had serious concerns. How they can keep traffic flowing on major arterials like Route 2 and College Parkway is problematic," she said.

The county also heard from a couple of churches in the area that already have traffic issues without the race.

County Chief Administrative Officer Dennis Callahan said this morning that an informal poll of area business indicated "they were 100 percent against the race. Public safety was the overriding issue, but local businesses did not want it.

Ms. Dixon added "The professionals who look at these things have serious concerns about public safety and the safety of the racers themselves. We had no other choice but to deny their request for a permit."

But race organizers can come back with an alternative course, she said.

"We recommended they come in with an alternative course. Very often that will happen. We would review it like any other request."

The churches' concerns were also a part of the decision, she said.

The Rev. Stephen Tisinger, pastor of Christ Our Anchor Presbyterian Church just off College Parkway, said their concern was strictly the Sunday morning timing.

"We are glad the county heard our concerns, but they had more concerns than just the concerns of the faith community, which were a small part of the total issues."

Should the race be moved to Saturday next year he said he would support it. "I would encourage my congregation to run in it."

Safety...?hmmmmm
What are the chances the the Fall Boat shows would be cancelled due to "safety"concerns?? Lots of foot and vehicular traffic at that time. Part of the show is held on a Sunday as well....Don t see any churches being vocal and complaining about that event...Oh wait,,,right,,,more people in town...more tithing...now i'm getting it....

Answer me this: The TRiathlon organizers followed the timeline given to them by the county. All information was submitted by the February deadline. The organizers were told "everything looks good, go work out the details with the police, etc." The county then sits on it until one month before the race is set to go an THEN denies the permit. AA County Executives and staff should be ashamed of themselves. What the county NEEDS to do now is answer for its' actions. WHat are the REAL reasons that they denied the permit? I will be at the meeting on the 18th.

SATURDAY RACE DAY
Moving the race to a Saturday next year could be a bad idea due to the fact that right around the time that most athletes will be on the road on their bikes (between 8am-10am). Isn't that about the time that the rush hours begin to and from Ocean City, MD?

Unbelievable!
I'm not from Annapolis but have been training and looking forward to the race all summer. My family and I were going to travel to Annapolis from Chesapeake, VA to attend my race. I find out that Annapolis pulls the rug under the athletes feet at the last minute, this whole situation has put a bad taste in my mouth about ever attending another "Annapolis" triathlon. You missed out on this family traveling that way for another race. Thanks Williamsburg for offering another race on the same day for people who have been training all summer.

Shame on several accounts involved in this event. The triathlon is a great event involving many people not just in Annapolis, but from out of town. To move the race to Sandy Point made alot of sense. I fail to understand several of the comments about the issue surrounding the bicycle route and churches. People are suggesting to have the race on a Saturday. Most events are planned on Sunday because the traffic is typically less on Sundays than Saturday. Let's also look at the logistics of the bicycle route. Swimmers will be transitioning to the bicycle roughly between 7:15-8:15am. That has them riding from that time until about 10 am. Don't many churches have 11 am services? The competitors will not take up the whole road, most likely by the time they get to any church on the route, they would be riding single file except to pass one another. By annoucing the route and estimated times people will riding, churches and people along the route can either plan around that time or embrace the event and cheer on the competitors. I'm always amazed how much the St. Margaret's Community embraces the A-10 Miler.

Embarrassed
I live in the Broadneck Peninsula, and do attend Church on Sundays. I would like to apologize to the Athlete's and the Organizers of this event, who have worked diligently to bring this great event to our area, and who were to participate in the triathlon, for the lack of support from this chosen area. My family and I are in total support of what your organization does and stands for, and am totally embarrassed of the actions of the "inconvenienced". Please forgive them for thier single minded, self absorbed, selfish, incredibly rediculus behavior. Maybe they can learn from this and not be so self rightous to think that those actions were a good representation of GOD. Didn't Jesus called the people who acted like this the "Pharisees".

Survey Results
FOUND THE FOLLOWING INFO ON AN OFFICIAL SURVEY THAT WAS DONE LAST YEAR AFTER THE FIRST RACE...... Results from the businesses that responded about the Annapolis Triathlon show 34% say the event had a positive impact on the City, while the same percentage said the event was a negative for Annapolis. 14% of the businesses responding were neutral..... SO IN OTHER WORDS, MORE THAN HALF OF ALL BUSINESSES HAD EITHER POSITVIE OR NEUTRAL FEELINGS ABOUT DOING ANOTHER TRIATHLON EVENT. WHY THEN DOES 8/4 CAPITAL STORY MAKE IT SOUND LIKE BUSINESSES WERE 100% NEGATIVE?..... 54% of the residents that responded said the City should host the triathlon again..... MORE THAN HALF THE CITY WANTS TO SEE THE EVENT HAPPEN AGAIN!..... Participants in the Annapolis Triathlon that responded to this survey were overwhelmingly positive about the event. The Annapolis Triathlon Club also released a survey it conducted of those who participated in the event as athletes, volunteers or spectators. They received more than 600 responses to questions about the quality of the route, the overall experience and the amount of time and money spent by the athletes while in the City. Responses received by the club show that participants were very impressed with the race and the City of Annapolis overall, and would very much like to see the event continue. This year’s triathlon was held on Sunday, and local churches have recently expressed concern regarding traffic issues caused by the race. Participants were asked if they would be willing to do the race on Saturday, and a large majority said yes.

Two more cents
I find it interesting that it is considered "safe" and convenient to close down I-97 for an average citizen's funeral procession without much warning, but "unsafe" and inconvenient to have a pre-planned bike route that would include advanced warning and signs. Another example of brilliant decision making.

"In The Long Run"
I have family that live in Utica, NY, a city that host a major 15K race every July that goes throughout the city. Rather than complain about what streets are closed for a few hours, the entire city turns out to cheer on family, friends, neighbors who are challenging themselves and serving as an example of what someone can accomplish with dedication. The Annapolis Triathlon could become a similar type event that strengthens and supports the community if business owners stop being selfish and elected officials show some courage by supporting this event.

Community Hypocrisy?!?
I am a new triathlete and a member of a church affected by this event last year. Those concerns were addressed by acknowledging improper procedures and changing the location and routes this year to minimize the impact. Yet, organizations no longer affected by the route have been quoted as saying that even if people THINK the event still passes their location they will be negatively affected. California is not affected by people thinking there might be an earthquake is it? If the event is disruptive and unsafe to the traffic and community, then timing is irrelevant, yet Pastor Tysinger states that if it were on Saturday he would encourage participation. My own pastor has stated that he is not against triathlons, only triathlons on Sunday. My question is why these same groups do not come out in protest of other events in the same places on Sundays. Here are just a few that I have been affected by on way to church on Sundays in the last year or two: Bay Bridge Run/Walk, Women’s Half Marathon, Annapolis 10 Miler. These great events pose many of the same issues yet the city embraces them as part of Annapolis. Churches are to be open and welcoming so why not embrace one more event that provides positives to charity, participants, and community? The event could welcome organizations to set up tents in front of their locations handing out water which saves support costs for the event and provides the organization a method of outreach that they are founded to provide. Finally, this event this year was to be for me the pinnacle of a very personal, physical, mental, and spiritual journey that began 3.5 years ago. While I will find another method for attaining my inner goal(s), I am disappointed that the basis of my spirituality is the reason for the removal of my peak. My higher power will guide me to find my goals. In the meantime, I ask that we all pray for harmony moving forward as a COMMUNITY.

Another Solution
I would not blame this group one bit if they decide to move their event to another city next year. How about North Beach or Chesapeake Beach! I bet they would love the visitors.

Road less traveled
It's too bad that this region has so many folks who just don't seem to understand or comprehend this is now a community of people and cultures from many different ethnicities, religions, and walks of life. We must all work together to support a happy, healthy, integrated community and give as much as we take (if not more). What kind of comments would someone receive if they suggested shutting down Churches on Sunday, Navy football on Saturday, or the entire tourist season because all the traffic gets in the way of a good bike ride. The road goes both ways...

Support the Triathlon
I am proud to be a member of the Annapolis triathlon community. It is one of the most supportive, encouraging, and active organizations of which I’ve had the pleasure to be a part. The leadership and the membership of this group put forth a constant effort to promote physical activity, education, and camaraderie. I sincerely hope that a solution can be found in time for this event. The Annapolis Triathlon provides an outstanding opportunity to showcase our city’s hospitality. Make it work!

Thanks Betty Dixon!
Thanks to Betty Dixon for keeping in mind that she works for the citizens of the county and holds their safety to be pinnacle in her decision making process. The whiners need to realize that the vast majority of people in our area don't care about fitness and have the right to drive around town without being held up by a useless race.

Support the Triathlon
Last Sunday on my way to Church, I found West Street was blocked off for the First Sunday Arts Festival. With a little inconvenience, I was able to make it to church on time and definitely in time to put money in the collection basket. The Triathlon in Annapolis is a great event along with the Annapolis 10 miler, Navy Football and the Boat Shows all of which make Annapolis attractive to tourists and residents from far and wide. A Triathlon embodies what Annapolis is all about. Swim, bike and run. It is my hope that the County and City will work with the Triathlon officials to keep the event alive.

SELFISHNESS
Well, I must say that I am quite disturbed at the county official's decision to deny permits for the bike portion of the Annapolis Triathlon. That being said, I am even more disappointed with the Broadneck Peninsula Churches and pastors. When I stop and think about everything I ever learned in 10 years of Catholic Education I'm befuddled. I remember learning about kindness, generosity, forgiveness and embracing and accepting others. This was to be done even if the beliefs and practices of those others were against our own. I also thought the church talked about unconditional love. All of this seems to go out the window if it means that the church will be inconvenienced. Again, I point out what seems to be selfishness and arrogance that the churches and pastors are showing. Triathlon embraces everyone. Triathletes embrace and welcome Christians, Jews, Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, amputees, cancer survivors, Caucasians, African Americans, and Asian Americans etc.... We embrace every race, color and religious believer. Moving the day of the race from Sunday is not the answer. It seems to me that the Christian churches and pastors want the race organizers to discriminate against faiths that may worship on another day of the week. Somehow, that doesn't seem to be very "christian." My father is a deacon in the Roman Catholic church. I went to Catholic schools. There was even a time when I was considered a christian. I then saw many things that seemed to be contradictory and I, lost my faith in religion. I haven't been to church in years. This is the kind of hypocrisy that drove me away. It's the kind of hypocrisy that makes me want to never set foot in a church again. If it was the goal of the local churches, pastors and county officials to squash a person's spirit, nicely done!

I agree with the people here who have expressed their disgust with Annapolis and Anne Arundel County over this mess. I did the triathlon last year and really enjoyed the event. I signed up again and I am looking forward to doing it again. It is a great event and the community should support it.

Intolerance from churches
It is interesting that churches are the main detractor from an event that promotes community and keeps healthy the temple where we are to keep Jesus' love: our bodies. In a world where there is so much selfishness and lack of caring for our fellow person, it is a shame that our churches who preach about love, caring, and sharing, that they are the ones not practicing what they preach. Is it any wonder why attendance in church is decreasing? There are 52 Sundays a year. It was asked that for one of them that they alter their schedule for one day. It would not be difficult. They have a weekly bulletin that could have informed their parishioners months in advance and, for those who have difficulty getting to mass, provide some ride assistance. The churches ask if it could be moved to Saturday. It is difficult since most of the logistics of bike inspection, packet pickup, and general information sharing is done on Saturday before the race. For those out of town racers, being here on Friday would be very difficult. Besides, don't we want tourists to assist us in raising revenue for our city? Do the residents of Annapolis realize that tourist revenue provides us the quality of life that makes Annapolis unique? Are we that selfish that we do not want to share our incredible city with others? If this decision forces a "no go" for a triathlon this year, what a serious bad example we will display to those who love to come to Annapolis and spend their dollars here. It comes down to one word: Sharing. Do we want to be known as the city that does not share? All of those churches out there that do not support this triathlon or any event that would disrupt one Sunday... Do you like to share? Think about how your selfishness changes the public perception about people of faith attending your churches.

The common good
A triathlon does more to promote the common good than church services do. A bike race and a triathlon encourages both youth and adults toward healthy physical activity. This while those who attend church have been shown to have lower physical fitness, higher rates of divorce, drinking, smoking, and truancy. If a government cannot do what is in the common good, then it must be replaced.

This is ridiculous!
I can not believe that the County Officials waited this late to decide this. This goes to show how little respect they have for some healthy Annapolis residents. If they actually polled residents in the area as opposed to businesses only they would have seen how much the community actually supports a healthy lifestyle and event. In this day and age with so many health problems related to obesity and sedentary lifestyles I find it hard to believe that taking a few extra minutes to go to and from church to be such an issue. It is ONE day. Can’t these parishioners plan accordingly? I assume they can take precautions when the weather is bad, or a road is temporarily closed or heaven forbid the lunch buffet starts a little bit later. I think they have forgotten to pray for open mindedness, patience, and community support! As far as a safety issue I a little confused. Let’s be a little realistic here. I was recently out on these roads and I noticed that there was very little traffic and safety issues. This seems to come down to poor leadership and respect from the Annapolis County Officials. This is a huge disappointment. I am sure that the race will go on and be a Fantastic event, but it is very sad to say that race organizers will have to do all this extra work this close to the race. Please come out and support the event and be a part of changing the negative into a positive!!!

This is wrong!
It's the entire Annapolis community that should have been surveyed, not the business owners. Have they EVER done ANYTHING for the city & county residents? The county's response, that late in the game, is a real disappointment. But I sincerely hope we will come up with an alternative course, whatever it can be in the short amount of time there is left. Volunteers will still be needed, as there WILL be a race, so please e-mail mary.lefebvre AT gmail.com if you can help. Show your support, come and cheer our athletes.
