Helen Clark

Helen Elizabeth Kieny Clark, 84, of Edgewater, died of complications following open heart surgery Aug. 26 at the Washington Hospital Center.

Mrs. Clark was born Aug. 7, 1924, in Washington, D.C., and attended secretarial school.

She worked for the federal government in the finance office and served with her husband in Presbyterian churches around the country.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, the Rev. Dr. Boswell Clark.

Survivors include three daughters, Helen E. "Betsy" Clark of Niceville, Fla., Sharon A. Clark of Crestview, Fla., and Ruth C. Packett of Edgewater; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

A celebration of her life will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the United Church of Christ of Annapolis, 8 Carvel Circle in Edgewater. Interment will be private. Arrangements are by Kalas Funeral Home.

Arvita Chew

Arvita Elizabeth Chew, 68, a resident of Harwood for 35 years, died of cancer Aug. 24 at the Specialty Hospital of Washington after an illness lasting since February.

Ms. Chew was born Aug. 9, 1940, in Friendship and graduated from the former Wiley H. Bates High School in 1958.

She was a member of Carter's United Methodist Church, where she served as an usher and on the kitchen crew and staff-pastor-parish relations committee. She was also a member of the Interdenominational Church Ushers Association of Anne Arundel County and Maryland.

She enjoyed gardening, yard sales, and family gatherings and trips.

Survivors include two sons, Harvey Donell Chew and Corey Lee Jones; three brothers, Lawrence Chew of Harwood, Roland Chew of Lanham and Charles Chew of Oxon Hill; four sisters, Mary Maynard of Suitland, Shirley Spriggs of Dunkirk, the Rev. Hattie McDuffie of Washington, D.C., and Frances Brown of Glen Burnie; and four grandchildren.

A Christian wake will be held at 9 a.m. tomorrow, followed by a funeral service at 10 a.m. at Friendship United Methodist Church, 22 West Friendship Road.

Interment will follow at Carter's United Methodist Church, 6715 Old Solomons Island Road in Friendship. Arrangements are by Sewell Funeral Home.

William Nick

William Glendon Nick, 84, of Shady Side, died suddenly Aug. 26 at Anne Arundel Medical Center after a brief illness.

Mr. Nick was born Dec. 23, 1923, in Shady Side to the late Irene Gross and Marion Nick.

He served in the Navy from 1943 until 1946. He then worked as a waterman and in masonry until he retired at the age of 62.

He was a member of St. Matthew's United Methodist Church of Shady Side for many years.

Survivors include his wife of 35 years, Dorothy L. Rawlings Nick; six sons, Rupert, Courtney, Angelo, Glendon and Ronald Nick and Melvin Neal; seven daughters, Cynthia and Tresia Nick, Constance Collins, Carolyn Neal, Alethea McNeil, Loretta Gray and Cheryl Stansbury; two brothers, Marshall and Herman Nick; three sisters, Mary Gross, Virginia Hopkins and Rosetta Demby; 37 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Family and friends may visit from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Reese and Sons Mortuary, 821 West St. A Christian wake will be held at 10 a.m. tomorrow, followed by a funeral service at 10:30 a.m. at Franklin United Methodist Church, 5345 Deale Churchton Road in Churchton.

Interment will be in the Maryland Veterans Cemetery in Crownsville.
