Charles Brown Jr.
Retired Navy Reserve Master Chief Petty Officer Charles Wesley "Charlie" Brown Jr., 84, of Fort Myers, Fla., for 28 years and previously of Annapolis, died Aug. 30 at Hope Hospice in Fort Meyers.
Mr. Brown was born Jan. 17, 1924, in Annapolis to the late Charles and Olive Brown.
Mr. Brown served in the Navy during World War II, and continued to serve in the Reserves for 41 years, retiring from the Naval Aviation Group based at Andrews Air Force Base.
He worked at the Naval Experimental Station in Annapolis and retired from the Naval Sea Systems Command in Washington, D.C.
He served as a deacon of the Heritage Baptist Church in Annapolis and of the Gateway Baptist Church in Fort Myers.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Geneva B. Williams; two brothers, Owen P. and Ernest M. Brown; and two grandsons.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Opal D. Brown; three sons, Charles W. Brown III of Bowie, Robert E. Brown of Crownsville and Thomas A. Brown; three daughters, Susan G. Phillips, Jane A. Irvin and Kathy N. Ross; one brother, Guy Brown of Melbourne, Fla.; 11 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Family and friends may visit from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. tomorrow at Lee Memorial Park Funeral Home, 12777 State Road 82 in Fort Myers. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home, and interment will be in Lee Memorial Park.

Robert Burns
Robert Joseph Burn, 85, of Chester since 1972, died Aug. 31 at the Queen Anne's County Hospice House in Centreville.
Mr. Burn was born Sept. 26, 1922, in Batavia, N.Y., to the late Robert and Catherine Fines Burns. He graduated from Batavia High School.
A pilot for commercial airlines for 32 years, he retired from U.S. Airways in 1982.
He served as a pilot in the Army Air Corps during World War II in the European Theatre.
He enjoyed boating and aviation.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, William and Neil Burns.
Survivors include his wife of over 60 years, Marjorie Kellogg Burns; two daughters, Patricia Durnherr of Webster, N.Y., and Melinda O'Burns of Reston, Va.; and one brother, Paul Burns of Batavia.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Arrangements are by Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home.

Burnardette Dawson
Burnardette "Betty" Goode Dawson, 87, a resident of Edgewater for 60 years, died Aug. 26 in her home.
Mrs. Dawson was born Dec. 27, 1920, in Marbury.
She met her husband while serving on the staff of an admiral at Bethesda Naval Hospital, and lived with him on duty stations including Cairo and Saudi Arabia and traveled throughout the Mediterranean region.
She was a founding member of Parkwood United Methodist Church and later attended Davidsonville United Methodist Church.
She enjoyed swimming, gardening and playing the piano.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Clarence Edmund "Larry" Dawson; three brothers; and one sister.
Survivors include one son, Douglas Dawson of Edgewater; one daughter, Diana Buzzard of West Virginia; and two grandsons.
Interment was in Lakemont Cemetery in Davidsonville. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Sept. 26 at Parkwood United Methodist Church, 35 Mayo Road in Edgewater. Arrangements are by Kalas Funeral Home.

Frank Fico Sr.
Frank J. Fico Sr., 90, a resident of Pasadena since 1960, died Aug. 29 at Genesis Eldercare in Severna Park.
Mr. Fico was born June 1, 1918, in New York.
He was a structural engineer for the B&O Railroad from 1950 to 1967 while working as a land surveyor, which he did until 1982. He also owned Hathaway Furniture from 1967 to 1985.
He was preceded in death in February by his wife, Mildred F. Fico.
Survivors include one son, Frank J. Fico II of Severna Park; one daughter, Patricia A. Burgan of Belair; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Ernest Foster
Ernest Lee "Ernie" Foster, 71, a resident of Annapolis for four years, died Aug. 29 in his home.
Mr. Foster was born July 8, 1937, in Maryland to the late Ernest Hiram and Nina Lucas Foster.
He worked as a NEA stationery engineer for 30 years, and worked with the event staff for University of Maryland College Park sporting events for 30 years.
He was the former president of NAPE.
Survivors include his wife of almost 50 years, Joyce Foster; one son, Michael Lee Foster of Chesapeake Beach; three daughters, Barbara Jeanne Foster of Gambrills, Brenda Joyce Ganzermiller of Laurel and Darleen Marie Hillen of Cumming, Ga.; two sisters, Joan Gessner of Lusby and Deborah Miller of The Plains, Va.; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild,

Helen Gibbons
Helen Mae Gibbons, 63, of Harrington, Del., and previously of Annapolis, died Aug. 30 at Delaware Hospice Center in Milford, Del.
Mrs. Gibbons was born Sept. 22, 1944, in Annapolis to the late Edmund and Helen Tidings Nalley.
She was a homemaker, and a member of St. Bernadette's Catholic Church in Harrington.
She was preceded in death in 2007 by her husband, Jerry W. Gibbons.
Survivors include two sons, Eddie Gibbons of Annapolis and Jerry J. Gibbons of Hagerstown; and five grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Bernadette's Catholic Church, 109 Dixon St. in Harrington, where friends may visit from 9:30 to 10:15 a.m.
Graveside services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens, 1911 Forest Drive, Annapolis.

Bhaguri Makhijani
Bhaguri G. "Bhagi" Makhijani, 85, a 15-month resident of Severna Park and previously of Bowie, died of natural causes Aug. 31 at Sunrise Assisted Living in Severna Park.
Mrs. Makhijani was born Feb. 27, 1923, in Karachi, India, to the late Tikamdas and Radha Munsukhani. She earned a college degree in education while in India, and after her arranged marriage moved the United States in 1957.
She was a member of the Sindhi Association of Washington and the Women's International Club of Bowie.
She enjoyed cooking, traveling, entertaining and visiting with family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband of over 50 years, Gobind P. Makhijani.
Survivors include two daughters, Bina Peterson of Riva and Shobha Whitacre of Severna Park; two brothers, Arjan and Prem Mansukhani of Northampton, England; one sister, Padma Chainani of Mumbai, India; and five grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. today at Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road in Edgewater. Interment is private.

Ann Messick
Ann B. Messick, 77, of Kilmarnock, Va., and formerly of Annapolis, died Sept. 1 in her home.
Mrs. Messick was born Feb. 28, 1931, in Rhode Island.
She was the founder and president of the Northern Neck Chapter of the Virginia Native Plant Society; worked to preserve Hickory Hollow Nature Trail; was an amateur naturalist and photographer; and a member of the Audubon Society and Wicomico Episcopal Church Choir.
She was preceded in death by one son, David Denson Messick.
Survivors include her husband of 57 years, Carter "Denny" Messick; one son, Richard Lee Messick of Severna Park; one daughter, Laurie Ann Adkins of Fincastle, Va.; and four grandchildren.
Family and friends may visit from 6 to 8 p.m. tomorrow at The Currie Funeral Home, 116 East Church St. in Kilmarnock.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in the Wicomico Episcopal Church in Wicomico Church, Va., with interment to follow in the church cemetery.

Margaret Ricketts
Margaret Louise Ricketts, 79, of Lothian for 28 years, died Aug. 30 at Calvert Memorial Hospital in Prince Frederick.
Mrs. Ricketts was born Nov. 2, 1928, in Washington, D.C., to the late Sidney R. Pumphrey and Ethel Louise Cooper.
She was a life-long member of Epiphany Episcopal Church in Forestville.
She was preceded in death by one daughter, Margaret Rose Ricketts Mencer.
Survivors include her husband of 59 years, William Thomas Rickets Sr.; two sons, William Thomas Ricketts Jr. of McDowell, Va., and George Walter "Buddy" Ricketts of Lothian; two daughters, Joan Frances Ricketts Locke of Midland, Va., and Mary Theresa Ricketts Redell of Cheltenham; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Delores Walker
Delores Jenkins Walker, 74, a resident of Annapolis for 15 years and previously of Baltimore, died Aug. 26 at Future Care of Arnold after a long illness.
Ms. Walker was born April 28, 1934, in Baltimore to the late Olivia Jenkins and Joseph Reid. She earned an associate's degree at the Community College of Baltimore, and her bachelor's and master's degrees from Coppin State College.
She was a member of Mount Calvary Christian Church of Baltimore, and later of Asbury Broadneck United Methodist Church, where she was active member of the Sing and Praying Band.
Survivors include her adopted family, James and Tina Carter of Annapolis.
A Christian wake will be held at 10:30 a.m. tomorrow at Asbury Broadneck United Methodist Church, 657 Broadneck Road in Annapolis, and the funeral will follow at 11 a.m. Arrangements are by Reese and Sons Mortuary.
Kenneth Ward Sr.
Kenneth Douglas Ward Sr., 64, a resident of Owings since 1974, died Aug. 30 in his home.
Mr. Ward was born June 7, 1944, in Deale to the late Gilbert L. and Gertrude Marquess Ward, attended Deale Elementary School, and graduated from Southern High School.
He was a supervisor and dock master for West River Marina in Galesville for many years, and later was the director of maintenance at Jesus the Good Shepherd Catholic parish in Owings.
He was a member of Grace Brethren Church of Calvert County in Owings.
He enjoyed baseball, football and golf, and working on his home, yard and gardens.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, David L. and Larry W. Ward; and one sister, Loretta Ann Alt.
Survivors include his wife of over 40 years, Chalice Slater Ward; two sons, Brian A. and Kenneth D. Ward Jr. of Owings; one daughter, Kathy L. Wilkerson of North Beach; two brothers, John G. Ward of Ellicott City and Ronald C. Ward of Deale; one sister, June M. Webb of Annapolis; and six grandchildren.
