Wednesday's obituaries recognize: Harvey Brandmiller, Helen Holt, Shirley Howes, Mary Huff, Timothy Neubauer, Rita Valeo and Charles Wood Jr.

Harvey Brandmiller 

Harvey Kelly Brandmiller Jr., 75, a 48-year resident of Annapolis, died of lung disease Sept. 2 at the Annapolis Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Mr. Brandmiller was born May 5, 1933, to the late Harvey and Jane Brandmiller. He graduated from Niles McKinley High School in 1951 and earned a bachelor's and master's degree from Youngstown State University in Ohio.

He served in the Army Signal Corps in Germany, participating in NATO maneuvers, and he also worked in the Western Area Command Special Services division where he directed, sang and produced shows.

After joining the Youngstown Playhouse, he performed in their first musical and was also staff vocalist at WFMJ Radio-TV Station in Youngstown. He studied at the SRT Academy of Broadcasting Arts, and was later employed at WPIX-TV in New York City and WXEX-TV in Petersburg, Va.

He later became partner and office manager at Dr. Roland E. Riley's chiropractic clinic in Annapolis.

Mr. Brandmiller was a member of the Colonial Players and served on its board of directors, helped with sound production and acted in shows. He also enjoyed volunteer work and travelling.

Survivors include one sister, Carol Lee Johanson of Petersburg, Fla.

Funeral services and interment will be private. Arrangements are by Kalas Funeral Homes.

Helen Holt

Helen Jean Spencer Holt, 58, of Harwood died of a stroke Aug. 30 at Anne Arundel Medical Center.

Ms. Holt was born Nov. 19, 1949, in Washington, D.C.

She worked at Tracey's Elementary School, and subsequently taught first grade at Mayo Elemetary School for 34 years.

She was an active and life-long member of Sollers United Methodist Church in Lothian, where she was a member of various choirs and organizations and loved teaching Sunday school.

She loved to spend time with family and friends and to travel.

She was preceded in death by her former husband, Bruce Seville Holt.

Survivors include two daughters, Monique Holt Jackson of Edgewater and Bridget Chelene Holt of Harwood; one brother, Richard Simmons Jr.; four sisters, Joan, Ruth Ann, Ruby Annette and Dale Smith; and one grandson.

Family and friends may visit from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Sollers United Methodist Church, 1219 Wrighton Road in Lothian, and at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Holy Family Catholic Church, 826 West Central Ave. in Davidsonville. Funeral services will follow at 11 a.m., and internment will be in Adams United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Arrangements are by Reese and Sons Mortuary.

Shirley Howes

Shirley Mae Howes, 69, a life-long resident of Churchton, died Aug. 30 at Anne Arundel Medical Center after a long illness.

Mrs. Howes was born Aug. 2, 1939, in Churchton to Alice T. Howes of Churchton and the late Milton Howes.

She worked at the IGA supermarket in Deale and alongside her husband, who was a waterman.

A homemaker, she enjoyed gardening, cooking and flowers.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Robert Howes; and one grandchild.

Survivors include her husband, James R. Howes; two sons, Robert Christopher Howes of Lusby and James Edward Howes of Churchton; one daughter, Cheryl Ann Howes of Churchton; one brother, John C. Howes of Huntingtown; two sisters, Alice M. Van Jeune of Deale and Mary Kidd of Lothian; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Family and friends may visit from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow at Hardesty Funeral Home, 905 Galesville Road, Galesville. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home, and interment will be in Woodfield Cemetery in Galesville.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Chesapeake, 445 Defense Highway, Annapolis, MD 21401.

Mary Huff

Mary Jo Puglisi Huff, 83, a resident of Severna Park for 56 years, died of natural causes Aug. 30 at Baltimore Washington Medical Center.

Mrs. Huff was born Oct. 24, 1924, in Wadsworth, Ohio, where she was raised. She graduated from Ohio State University in 1947.

A homemaker, she was a long-time active member of Severna Park Evangelical Presbyterian Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert G. Huff.

Survivors include one son, Robert J. Huff of Port Charlotte, Fla.; one daughter, Debra Lee Glover of Dublin, Calif.; two brothers, Joseph and John Puglisi of Wadsworth; and four grandchildren.

Family and friends may visit from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Barranco and Sons Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Highway. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Severna Park Evangelical Presbyterian Church, 110 Ritchie Highway in Pasadena.

Interment will follow in Glen Haven Memorial Park in Glen Burnie.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Shepherd's Gate, 1660 Portola Ave., Livermore, CA 94551.

Timothy Neubauer

Timothy Todd "Tim" Neubauer, 48, of Ocean City and previously of Pasadena, died Aug. 30 in his former wife's home after a long illness.

Mr. Neubauer was born Jan. 24, 1960, in Baltimore to Mable Neubauer of Pasadena and the late Milton Neubauer.

He was a state certified welder and belonged to Local 16 of Iron Workers' union.

Survivors include his former wife, Patricia Kenneally; one son, Jesse Kenneally; two daughters, Rachael and Melanie Neubauer; and one sister, Lisa Sizemore.

A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. tomorrow at Ocean City Baptist Church, 8 Philadelphia Ave.

Rita Valeo

Rita Catherine Valeo, 94, of Crofton and previously of Bowie, died of a heart attack Aug. 29 at Doctors Hospital.

Mrs. Valeo was born Aug. 9, 1914, in Mamaroneck, N.Y.

She founded Tom Thumb Day Nursery in Bowie in 1964.

She was preceded in death by her husband of over 40 years, Leonard "Scotty" Valeo; and one son, Leonard Valeo.

Survivors include one son, Anthony Valeo of Bowie; one daughter, Patricia Merkle of Stewartstown, Pa.; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Family and friends may visit from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Beall Funeral Home, 6512 N.W. Crain Highway in Bowie.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Ascension Catholic Church, 12700 Lanham Severn Road in Bowie. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 415 N. Charles St., Baltimore, MD 21201.

Charles Wood Jr.

Charles Frederick "Fred" Wood Jr., 52, a resident of Severna Park for over 20 years, died Aug. 29 in his home.

Mr. Wood was born April 20, 1956, in Baltimore to Charles F. Wood Sr. of Baltimore and Mary Ringrose of Halethorpe.

He completed a Carpenter's Union apprenticeship program and worked as a carpenter until 1997, when he worked as a kitchen designer at the Home Depot in Annapolis.

He served in the Marine Corps from 1976 to 1979.

He was a member of the Severna Park Jaycees, where he served as president and of the Sons of the American Legion.

He enjoyed listening to music, the Blues Festival at Sandy Point, and spending time with his pit bull dog.

Survivors include his former wife, Judith Bean Wood of Annapolis; two daughters, Jessica Guerieri of Chester and Aimee Wood of Annapolis; one brother, Elmer Grap of Ellicott City; three sisters, Susan Boritz of Baltimore and Debbie Apostoledes and Robin Cox of Fallston; and two grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. tomorrow at the Maryland Veterans Cemetery Chapel in Crownsville. A memorial service will follow at 11 a.m. at Chartwell Golf and Country Club, 1 Chartwell Drive Severna Park. Arrangements are by Barranco and Sons Severna Park Funeral Home.
