Liane Gonzalez
Liane Lopez Gonzalez, 77, a five-year resident of Bowie, died of colon cancer Aug. 29 at Baywoods of Annapolis after a four-year illness.
Mrs. Gonzalez was born Aug. 18, 1931, in Washington, D.C., to the late Irene and John Lopez. She graduated from Eastern High School in 1949.
She was a Nationwide insurance agent for 35 years and owned an insurance agency in Clinton.
An ordained minister from the Center of Metaphysics, she was a member of the Unitarian Church and Chartered Life Underwriters. She was the founder of the Women Life Underwriters Confederation and the past president of Business Professional Women's Association.
She was preceded in death by her husband of almost 50 years, Jose M. Gonzalez; and one son, Michael Gonzalez.
Survivors include two sons, Jose Gonzalez of Bowie and Stephen Gonzalez of Edgewater; one brother, John Lopez of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; two sisters, Joan Meyers of Arlington, Va., and Sylvic Marsden of Ocean Pines; and three granddaughters.
A celebration of her life will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road in Edgewater. Interment will be private.

Margaret Gross
Margaret Elizabeth Gross, 86, a long-time resident of Tracys Landing, died Aug. 30 in her home after a long illness.
Mrs. Gross was born April 8, 1922, in Maryland.
She was a longtime member of Carter's United Methodist Church, where she served on the Usher's Board, and an honorary member of the Ladies' Auxiliary of the Deale Volunteer Fire Department.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry W. Gross.
Family and friends may visit from 6 to 8 p.m. tomorrow at Carter's United Methodist Church in Friendship. A Christian wake will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, and funeral services will follow at 11 a.m. Interment will be in the church cemetery, and arrangements are by Sewell Funeral Home.

Fred Hawkins Jr.
Dr. J. Fred Hawkins Jr., 89, of Sarasota, Fla., and formerly of Severna Park, died Aug. 26 at Sarasota Memorial Hospital.
Dr. Hawkins was born Dec. 26, 1918, in Baltimore and graduated from Baltimore City College in 1937, from John Hopkins University in 1941 and from John Hopkins Medical School in 1944.
A board-certified general surgeon, he practiced in Annapolis and was chief of surgery for 10 years at Anne Arundel Medical Center, where he was chief of staff for one year.
He served with the Army Medical Corps in Japan from 1946 to 1947.
He was a member of many medical associations and commodore of the Chesapeake Bay Rotary Yacht Squadron. He was also a member of the Rotary International for 25 years; the Annapolis Yacht Club for over 30 years; and the Maryland Historical Society.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Lynne Hawkins; and one son, Wiggo K. Anderson.
Survivors include his wife of 35 years, A. Doris Hawkins; two sons, J. Craig Hawkins of Nantucket, Mass., and Frederick A. Hawkins of Salisbury; one daughter, Judith L. Doody of Chesapeake Beach; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Harry Layne
Harry W. Layne, 58, of Chesapeake Beach, died Aug. 30 in his home.
Mr. Layne was born Feb. 9, 1950, in Sissonville, W.Va.
Survivors include his wife, Meta Layne; two daughters; four brothers; and two sisters.

Richard Mackey Sr.
Richard Alan "Rich" Mackey Sr., 65, a resident of Crofton for over 30 years, died of complications from pneumonia Sept. 2 at Johns Hopkins University Hospital after a six-week illness.
Mr. Mackey was born May 15, 1943, in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. He earned a bachelor's degree in mathematics from Manhattan College in 1965, and a master's of business administration in 1966 from the University of Pittsburgh.
He worked briefly for IBM and joined the former Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation in 1971, where he rose to executive vice president. In 1983, he joined the law firm of Venable, LLC as their first executive.
Mr. Mackey served in the Navy, where he was commissioned in 1967 and was later promoted to lieutenant. He was awarded the Navy Achievement Award.
He was active in various PTA's, served on three county planning commissions and was president of the Crofton Swim and Tennis Club. He was also appointed to the County Development Services Corporation.
Survivors include his wife of 37 years, Susan Siefert Mackey; two sons, Richard Alan Mackey Jr. of Ellicott City and James Mackey of Crofton; two daughters, Maria Moye of Westfield, N.J., and Lisa Mackey of Arlington, Va.; one brother, Robert Mackey of Davidsonville; and four grandchildren.
A celebration of his life will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today and tomorrow at Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road in Edgewater.
A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 9 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 109 Duke of Gloucester St. Interment will be in Lakemont Memorial Gardens.

Eleanor Mays
Eleanor Louise "Miss Kitty" Fisher Mays, 86, a resident of Severna Park for 26 years and previously of Dundalk, died of natural causes Sept. 2 at her daughter's home.
Mrs. Mays was born March 5, 1922, in Baltimore.
She worked as a machinist with Western Electric for over 35 years, retiring in 1982.
She loved children and baby-sat for many Severna Park residents.
Survivors include one daughter, Kathy Holmes of Severna Park; and four grandchildren.

Carla Miles
Carla Joan Miles, 66, an Annapolis resident for 26 years, died of complications from lung cancer Sept. 1 at Anne Arundel Medical Center after an illness lasting five years.
Mrs. Miles was born Sept. 8, 1941, in San Francisco to the late Gladys and William Schlotter. She earned an associate degree from Diablo Valley Community College.
She worked as a stewardess for United Airlines before her marriage, but was proudest of being a Navy wife and mother. She was the "adopted mother" to many midshipmen.
She was a member of St. Anne's Episcopal Church.
Survivors include her husband of 45 years, Retired Navy Cmdr. R. Jeffrey Miles; one daughter, Erica A. Smith of Crofton; and two grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Sept. 25 at St. Anne's Episcopal Church, Church Circle, followed by a celebration of her life at Harry Browne's, 66 State Circle. Arrangements are by Taylor Funeral Home.

Saumel Musar
Saumel Sebastian "Sam" Musar, 91, a resident of Sarasota, Fla., for three years and previously of Annapolis for 20 years, died of natural causes Sept. 1 at Live Oak Manor in Sarasota.
Mr. Musar was born Aug. 5, 1917, in Newell, Pa., and graduated from Brownsville High School in 1935.
He worked for 45 years with Allied Chemical Corp., now Honeywell, as a sulfuric acid foreman.
He was a member of a nationwide hazard materials response team, Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Newell and St. Mary's Catholic Church in Annapolis.
He enjoyed shooting pool with his son-in-law, following Tiger Woods in golf and was a huge fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Jean La Scala Musar; five brothers; and one sister.
Survivors include one son, Michael T. Musar of Oxford, Pa.; one daughter, Amy Roberts of Sarasota, Fla.; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Michael Salvatore
Michael Angelo "Pa" Salvatore, 89, a resident of Crofton for 16 years, died of natural causes Aug. 31 at Anne Arundel Medical Center.
Mr. Salvatore was born May 27, 1919, in Pittsburgh and graduated from Keystone Engineering Institute in 1941.
He was manager of the Naval Oceanographic Office from 1961 to 1963, then served with the Central Intelligence Agency until he retired in 1972. He was a key player in the Cuban Missile Crisis, his family said.
He served in the Air Force from 1943 to 1946 as a sergeant.
He was a member of Elizabeth Anne Seton Catholic Church. He loved Scrabble, watching birds and collecting stamps and coins.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Carol R. Salvatore; brother, Frank Salvatore; and two sisters, Anna Tarquinio and Jean Sibert.
Survivors include two sons, Michael Salvatore of Crofton and Peter Salvatore of Gambrills; two daughters, Anne Carpenter of Lakeville, Minn., and Elizabeth Milligan of Crofton; two brothers, Vincent Salvatore of Ramona, Calif. and Nicholas Fratto of Pittsburgh; one sister, Philomena Scalise of Pittsburgh; and eight grandchildren.

James Tallent
Incorrect information was submitted in the obituary for James E. Tallent, 67, of Arnold in Saturday's edition of The Capital.
Mr. Tallent was a member the UAW Union 239 and was preceded in death by his parents, William and Ernestine Tallent.
