Friday's obituaries recognize: Frederick Gage, Benjamin Jones, William Mercer, Martin Richardson, Michael Salvatore, Donald Scott and Raymond Sprague

Frederick Gage

Frederick John Gage, 70, a longtime resident of Arnold, died of complications from chronic kidney failure Sept. 2 at Anne Arundel Medical Center.

Mr. Gage was born May 26, 1938, in Manchester, N.H.

He was a retired district sales manager and won many awards. He worked for Federal-Mogul for 43 years.

He served in the Army during the Vietnam War and was involved in developing Para-Commander parachutes.

Mr. Gage was a member of Belvedere Yacht Club, Aircraft Owners Pilot Association and the Experimental Aircraft Association.

He enjoyed flying, boating, fishing, going to yard sales, tinkering with engines, camping and spending time with his family.

He was preceded in death by one son, Michael Gage.

Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Jacqueline M. Gage; one son, David M. Gage of Arnold; one daughter, Kathleen G. Smith of Arnold; two brothers, Philip Gage of Colebrook, N.H., and Richard Gage of Bedford, N.H.; three sisters, Teresa Schmidt of Burlington, Mass., Regina McGrail on Manchester, N.H., and Susan Grotheer of Phoenix, Ariz.; and four grandchildren.

Friends and family may visit from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Barranco and Sons Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Highway.

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Monday at St. John Neumann Catholic Church, 620 N. Bestgate Road.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the National Kidney Foundation, 30 E. 33rd St., New York, NY 10016.

Benjamin Jones

Benjamin Edward "Bud Ricky" Jones, 57, of Lothian died Aug. 31 at Anne Arunden Medical Center.

Mr. Jones was born Oct. 21, 1950, in Washington, D.C., to James Henry and Dorothy Marie Bias Jones. He graduated from Southern High School in Harwood in 1969.

He worked for the Board of Education, then worked for Reliable Contracting before he retired in 2003.

He attended Adams United Methodist Church when he was young.

He enjoyed farming, hunting, fishing, listening to Gospel music and watching television. He especially enjoyed Westerns, the Lifetime channel and old cartoons. He also enjoyed delivering newspapers.

Survivors include two sons, Deontroy and Benjamin Jones Jr.; one daughter, Beneka Jones Sirko; one brother, James Jones; eight sisters, Barbara Tongue, Mamie E. Brice, Pamela C. Smith, Romcesa O. Estep, Cynthia C. Francis, and Bonita, Wilhelmina and Sonya Y. Jones; 12 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Family and friends may visit at 9 a.m. tomorrow at Adams United Methodist Church, 937 Bayard Road in Lothian. A Christian wake will be held at 10:30 a.m., and funeral services will follow at 11 a.m.

Interment will be in the church cemetery. Arrangements are by Reese and Sons Mortuary.

William Mercer

William Burtis Mercer, 84, of Cape St. Claire for 37 years, died suddenly of heart failure Sept. 1 at Anne Arundel Medical Center.

Mr. Mercer was born Aug. 12, 1924, in Fairmont, W.Va., to the late Arza Fountain Thomas and Ella Burtis Schooley Mercer. He earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry from West Virginia Wesleyan College and a master's degree from Ohio State University.

He taught chemistry and mathematics at Denison University in Ohio and Salem College in West Virginia. He also worked for the Department of Defense, then at the Naval Ship Research and Development Center in Annapolis. He retired in 1985.

Mr. Mercer held several patents with his coworkers.

He was a member of Cape Saint Claire United Methodist Church, where he served on the board and visited the sick and shut-ins. He was also a member of the American Chemical Society and the Sigma Xi Scientific Research Society.

He studied Spanish and French, and enjoyed painting watercolors and baking bread.

Survivors include his wife of over 50 years, Doris C. Fisher Mercer; one son, Mark Burtis Mercer of Lutherville; one daughter, Susan Mercer Coale of Arnold; one brother, Herbert B. Mercer of Conway, S.C.; and four grandchildren.

A memorial visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Sept. 12 at Barranco and Sons Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Highway.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Sept. 13 at Cape St. Claire United Methodist Church, 855 Chestnut Tree Drive. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Cape Saint Claire United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, 855 Chestnut Tree Drive, Annapolis, MD 21409.

Martin Richardson

Martin Allen Richardson, 72, of Mount Airy and formerly of Annapolis, died Aug. 22 in his home.

Mr. Richardson was born May 26, 1936, in Charleston, W.Va., to the late E. C. and Ruth Richardson. He graduated from Charleston High School.

He worked in construction management and owned a construction company. He managed large commercial projects in Saudia Arabia including banks, hospitals and embassies.

He loved the Chesapeake Bay and was an avid crabber and fisherman. He also enjoyed watching football and baseball games and maintaining his fish aquariums.

He was preceded in death by one brother, E. R. "Richie" Richardson; and one sister, Ann Richardson Sheets.

Survivors include one son, Benjamin Richardson of Brooklyn, N.Y.; eight daughters, Lisa Miller of Shady Side, Pamela Wagner of Arnold, Rebecca Jo Mayer of Stevensville, Cheryl Cannon of Greenspring, W.Va., Nicola Moxey of Centreville and Samantha, Coridan and Heidi May Richardson of Mount Airy; and seven grandchildren.

Funeral services are private. Arrangements are by Scarpelli Funeral Home.

Michael Salvatore

Incorrect information was submitted in the obituary for Michael Angelo Salvatore, 89, of Crofton in yesterday's edition of The Capital.

Mr. Salvatore is survived by his brother, Nicholas Fratto of Pittsburgh.

Thomas Schulz

Thomas Michael "Tom" Schulz, 86, an 18-year resident of Heritage Harbour, died of lung cancer Sept. 3 at the Mandrin Chesapeake Hospice House in Harwood after a long illness.

Mr. Schulz was born Feb. 2, 1922, in Brooklyn, N.Y., to the late Thomas H. Schulz and Margaret Lawler. He graduated from St. Augustine High School and earned a bachelor's degree from New York University.

He was an international executive sales manager for Remington electric shavers, then a national sales manager of G.E.'s small appliance division, and finally president and founder of Fountain Products in Connecticut.

He served in the Army in all four theatres of battle during World War II.

He was a community advocate in Maryland and for Bridge House, Inc., in Connecticut. He was a member of the Masons Lodge, American Legion Post 7 and St. John Neumann Catholic Church, where he was served as a Eucharistic minister. He was active in the Heritage Harbour community.

He enjoyed travel, dance, tennis, golf and socializing with family and friends. He was proud of his German and Irish heritage.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Audrey E. Schulz; one son, Thomas Schulz Jr. of Wallingford, Conn.; five daughters, Eileen Shalvoy of Southbury, Conn., Jo Ann Wells of Severna Park, Marilyn Glover of West Hartford, Conn., Nancy Sedensky of Newtown, Conn., and Ann Marie Reardon of The Woodlands, Texas; one sister, Mary Malley of Rockaway Point, N.Y.; and 14 grandchildren.

A celebration of his life will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Monday at Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road in Edgewater. A memorial Mass will be offered at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. John Neumann Catholic Church, 620 Bestgate Road. Interment will be private.

Donald Scott

Donald Bryan Scott, 80, of Bethesda and previously of Annapolis, died of cancer Aug. 29 at Montgomery County Hospice's Casey House.

Mr. Scott was born Feb. 17, 1928, in Vero Beach, Fla.

He worked for Montgomery County for 30 years, retiring in 1994 as an environmental protection inspector.

He served in the Navy in Annapolis.

He was a member of the West Annapolis Volunteer Fire Department and was an avid golfer and fisherman. He enjoyed cooking.

He was preceded in death by one son, Donald B. Scott Jr.

Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Barbara L. Scott; three daughters, Pamela A. Peters and Heather L. Scott of Annapolis and Jennifer L. Scott of Rockville; one brother, R. Fitzsimmons Scott of Florida; two sisters, Dorothy Scott Hogan and Judy S. Smith of Florida; two granddaughters; and one great-grandson.

Raymond Sprague

Raymond Kenneth Sprague, 63, of Vero Beach, Fla., and previously of Crofton and Riva, died Aug. 26 at the Hospice House in Vero Beach.

Mr. Sprague was born July 7, 1945, in Providence, R.I., to the late H. Kenneth Sprague and Grace A. Clark. He graduated from Central Falls High School in Rhode Island in 1963 and earned a bachelor's degree from The Defiance College in 1967.

He served as a specialist in the Army from 1968 to 1971 in Germany.

He worked for over thirty years as a photogrammetry analyst and later was a software engineer for the Central Intelligence Agency.

He retired as a member of the Senior Intelligence Service and had assignments with the National Photographic Interpretation Center, National Reconnaissance Office, and National Imagery and Mapping Agency.

He helped develop current imagery intelligence gathering and interpretation technologies.

He was an avid golfer, car enthusiast and devoted fan of the Boston Red Sox and Washington Redskins.

He was preceded in death in July by his wife of almost 40 years, Diane Taylor Sprague.

Survivors include one son, Jeffrey Sprague of Annapolis; and one brother, Stephen Sprague of Tucson, Ariz.

Mr. Sprague's ashes will be spread at sea in Rhode Island. Arrangements are by Thomas S. Lowther Funeral Home and Crematory.
