Warrant sweep

Ten people were arrested in a citywide warrant sweep Oct. 1, city police said.

The sweep, part of the city's Capital City Safe Streets initiative, was conducted with help from the county Sheriff's Office and K-9 officers from the state Department of Corrections, said Officer Hal Dalton, city police spokesman.

The goal was to serve some of the city's roughly 900 unserved warrants. That figure is "not bad" compared to the number of outstanding warrants at other agencies, Officer Dalton said.

The sweep began at 4:30 p.m. and ended at 11 p.m.

Following is a list of the people arrested and the charges: Sherri Creek, 40, theft; Garland Tracy McGowan, 46, traffic violation; Montay Lee Colbert, 23, trespassing; Markesha Ray Johnson, 25, failure to appear in court; Jose Ronald Contreras, 31, failure to appear in court; Tyrone Shanard Hawkins, 23, drug possession; Mauricus Dejuan White, 22, assault; David Thompson Williams, 29, assault and trespassing; Deantray Lamar Johnson, 22, drug possession with intent to distribute; and Douglas Morton, 31, drug paraphernalia.

Equipment snatched

Someone stole a $1,200 cable locator that was being used to survey an intersection last Thursday morning in the Rolling Knolls community near Annapolis, county police said.

Patrick Shockney, an employee of Baltimore-based Utiliquest, told police he was working at Wayward Drive and Valley Road. Then, at 9:45 a.m., Mr. Shockney left unattended a RD 4000 receiver at the intersection, so he could survey and locate utility lines in the area.

When he came back 10 minutes later, the small, gray receiver was gone.

West County

Attempted robbery

A man tried to rob a Laurel hotel employee Saturday night, county police said.

The employee of Motel 6 told police that, at about 9 p.m., a man walked into the office at 3510 Old Annapolis Road and asked him to open the ice machine room.

When the employee couldn't open the door, he told police the man pulled out a handgun and pushed it against his ribs. A customer walked in during the robbery and scared the armed man away.

Police searched the area, but could not find the robber who is described as black and 5 feet 10 inches tall.

He was wearing a black, hooded shirt and cargo pants.

Millersville

Steel tank stolen

A radiator and 200-gallon stainless steel tank were stolen from outside a business in Millersville, county police said.

On Saturday evening, an employee of Beacon Electric had locked up the trailer at 8377 Jumpers Hole Road. When he returned Wednesday afternoon, he noticed someone broke into a junked company Chevrolet truck and stole a radiator. A steel tank, worth $2,000, was also stolen.

Police said they would periodically patrol the site.

North County

Drug arrest

Two men and a woman were charged with drug distribution after county police found more than 100 grams of marijuana during a traffic stop Sunday morning in Glen Burnie.

At just after midnight, police saw a 1996 Lexus with Delaware license plates turning left from Woodside Terrace onto Parke West Drive, with its headlights turned off.

Police stopped the Lexus at the Shell gas station at Parke West Drive and Quarterfield Road. Police said that, as the vehicle pulled into the gas station, a man with a black and red bag jumped out of the back seat and ran. Officers chased him, but lost him in a wooded area.

While talking to the man and woman who were in the Lexus, police said they smelled a strong odor of marijuana.

Officers searched the car and found 3.3 grams of marijuana.

Vickie A. Hawkins, 21, of Glen Burnie and Daniel Hunter Howard, 22, of Severn, were arrested and charged with distribution of marijuana.

Police continued to search the woods and found the bag with which the other man was seen running. Inside, officers found a scale and 103.2 grams of marijuana.

Shortly afterward, officers got an anonymous tip that he was near the Wal-Mart on Quarterfield Road. Bonrick Lee Barksdale, 21, of Annapolis was arrested, and $4,530 in cash was found in his pocket, police said.

He was charged with drug distribution, police said.

Man assaulted

A man was struck over the head with a wooden pole during a large fight in Pasadena Sunday morning, county police said.

At about 3 a.m., police were called to the 8500 block of Skipjack Place to break up a large fight where someone had possibly been stabbed.

The crowd scattered when officers arrived, leaving only a few people idling about. Those remaining told police a man who had been injured in the fight was taken to Baltimore Washington Medical Center in Glen Burnie.

Police found the man at the emergency room with contusions and cuts to his head. He told officers he had tried to break up a large fight when someone struck him on the head with a pole. His friends were able to pull him from the fight, he said, and took him to the hospital.

A man found in the hospital parking lot was identified as the attacker and was arrested.

Ronald Joseph Heath, 29, of Baltimore was charged with first-degree assault.

Man robbed

A pizza delivery man was knocked down and robbed at knifepoint while taking food to a home in Glen Burnie Friday, county police said.

At about 8:45 p.m., the Domino's Pizza employee was delivering food in the 1100 block of Wynbrook Road when a man armed with a knife tackled him and demanded his money.

The delivery driver was not hurt in the attack.

The robber is described as black, 6 feet tall, and 180 pounds. He was wearing a red, hooded sweatshirt and blue jeans.

Fuel tanks drained

Three gas tanks were drained outside a Harmans business during the night Sept. 30, county police said.

The 750-gallon tanks contained gas at 5:30 p.m. when American IV Products employees left the business at 7485 Shipley Ave. Early the next morning, workers noticed $4,000 worth of gas had been drained from the tanks.
