Interference over 80-ft. ham radio tower

Capital Gazette Communications
Published 02/07/11

Ham radio operator Richard M. Hambly, of Severna Park, is facing waves of interference from neighbors challenging his permit from Anne Arundel County to construct an 80-foot radio tower in his Hawick Court backyard in Chartwell.

Sharon Lee Tegler — For The Capital
The radio tower in Richard Hambly’s backyard is currently 70 feet high. Hambly wants to add an antenna bringing it to 80 feet, below the 100-foot height maximum set by county regulations.

Claiming Hambly's tower constitutes "interference" with the community, 41 residents from Chartwell and Chartwood have filed an appeal with the Anne Arundel County Board of Appeals to have his permit rescinded.

Ray Robertson, who also lives on Hawick Court, said residents contend they were not consulted before Hambly applied for a permit and began erecting the tower.

Antenna Tower - 2011-05-09 22:24:20

These people make me laugh. They complain about cell phone towers, CO emissions and everything else as they drive there SUV's while talking non stop and illegally on their cell phones. I hope Hambly sues the bastards and gets his attorney fees paid by them. Maybe if they paid attention to their kids, and the drug problem they wouldn't have time to meddle in man pursuing his hobby lawfully.

It is Under County Lime & Interfere - 2011-02-10 13:40:42

There are very good reasons that it shouldn't be the cause of interference.

1) Most Amateur Radio Transmitters are sold under Federal Certifictions that require that any signal they generate is quite clean.

2) A clean signal is a matter of pride to most Amateurs. They will check for interference in their own house and eliminate causes.

3) If interference does occur, it is most often the result of the manufacturer of the interferred with device not including any extraneous signal rejection. See Part 15 notice on most consumer electronics.

4) Interference is related to how strong the signal is. The laws of physic say that if the source of interference is twice as far away, it is only one quarter as strong.

6) Given the credentials of the owner of the property, his word that his station is clean should be all the expert testimony on interference that is needed. GPS systems are low signal devices that rely on reliable satellite reception for operation.

And lasty, Anne Arundel County is specifically forbidden from trying to regulate interference by a ruling of the Federal Communications Commission (PRB-1).

It's still under the County limit - 2011-02-09 20:21:55

It's not a variance issue. I don't give the neighbors a chance. Technically, they are entitled to have one of their own, not that anyone would look forward to seeing more towers popping out above the treeline or to maybe consider every time their home electronics went haywire.

Maybe the County should require Hambly to provide an expert's testimony why it doesn't and WON'T interfere?

the problem is, he is not looking to build, it's already there, but the writer's first sentence leads reader to believe he is building a new tower.

Drugs, infection, high school cheating scandals, let's spend a millions to build them a new school.

Why do I think the tower is bothering Chartwell more than Chartwood. At least the slums of SP can hang their laundry from the tower.

lighten up. It only adding 10 feet to an existing structure.

Remember, when cell phone service is disrupted and phone service is out of order. We will need Ham radios for emergency communications.

this is an atrocity - 2011-02-08 11:06:59

I have several low end investment properties in this area and the real estate market is bad enough without this type of atrocity lurking overhead. Its bad enough in Severna Park as it is, staph infections, drug use run amock, high school cheating scandals and steroid use by athletes.... this is simply too much.

Your kidding - 2011-02-07 18:10:46

What on earth is it about this county and its residents.People whining about islands and what the owners are doing with them.People whining about a fence being built in Annapolis.Whining about a casino. And now were gonna whine about a radio tower.Oh and lets not forget about all the whining about AA County police.I have a suggestion. If you're so unhappy sell your house and move.I guess you better move to a deserted island though because things are being built everywhere else.
