George Washington was here 225 years ago today

The words were first spoken in the State House's old Senate Chamber 225 years ago today, but their legacy is much larger than the single sheet of paper on which they were written.

James Renwick Manship Sr. portrays George Washington resigning as commander-in-chief of the Continental Army on the very spot it happened in the Maryland State House on Dec. 23, 225 years ago.

At noon on Dec. 23, 1783, George Washington read his brief resignation as commander-in-chief of the Continental Army to Congress from a space now marked with a plaque in the chamber. At the time, Annapolis was serving as the nation's capital, and would continue to do so until 1784.
