The words were first spoken in the State House's old Senate Chamber 225 years ago today, but their legacy is much larger than the single sheet of paper on which they were written.

At noon on Dec. 23, 1783, George Washington read his brief resignation as commander-in-chief of the Continental Army to Congress from a space now marked with a plaque in the chamber. At the time, Annapolis was serving as the nation's capital, and would continue to do so until 1784.
