There is no gray area when it comes to sharks, thanks in large part to Steven Spielberg's thriller "Jaws" based on Peter Benchley's novel. No kid of my era who heard the ear-piercing shriek, ''shark!,'' hesitated for an instant; we made a mad dash for dry land even if we were in a pool. Spielberg's fish tale forever changed the public's relationship to these apex predators, and not for the better.
