South County: Davidsonville teen coins new craze

Chris Cassidy has coined a new craze at Archbishop Spalding High School.

Dozens of his freshman classmates walk the hallways of the school looking like teenage Mr. Ts, wearing necklaces made from golden Sacajawea dollars, or half-dollars and quarters that Chris has turned into inexpensive jewelry.

The coin pendants are perforated by triangles and squares or carved into initials or Japanese symbols. They're slung on shiny chains Chris purchased at a local craft shop. The hottest coins are cut to look like the 1980s video game character, Pac-Man. The most intricate is a dollar sign that takes several hours to carve.
