A gate at Mapes Road to Fort George G. Meade is only one of the security steps for contractors looking to tap into the work on base.
But smaller contractors likely will run into obstacles trying to get the necessary clearances to work at certain high-security buildings on base.
A backlog in security clearance requests, higher scrutiny since the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks and the long wait for approving trustworthy workers could eliminate small firms before they have a chance to compete, said Heather A.
