Outsourcing charitable work

As the owner of three small businesses, Carroll Hynson doesn't have much time to give back.

So he works with the Community Foundation of Anne Arundel to help out.

In 2005, the Annapolis native set up a fund through the organization to buy defibrillators that Mr. Hynson expects will eventually be installed in 80 local African-American churches.

The fund, which currently has more than $7,000, not only allows him to reduce his taxable income through charitable giving, but it also may help save the lives of those having a heart attack during services, he said.
