Change clears the way for more corporate ownership of funeral homesPublished 12/02/07
Funeral businesses in Anne Arundel County could see new competition from corporations after a federal judge struck down a key law in October that had been on the books since the 1940s.

Mr. Kalas said his company’s long-standing reputation for personal service will help fend off any competition that may come as a result of a recent judge’s decision that paved the way for more corporations to open up funeral homes.
U.S. District Court Judge Richard Bennett in Baltimore ruled Oct. 17 that a law preventing corporations formed since 1945 from owning funeral homes in Maryland was an unconstitutional regulation. His ruling opens the floodgates for Maryland and out-of-state corporations to potentially expand with new funeral homes here.
