Tourism Promotion Act of 2008 could mean millions for marketing Maryland

State lawmakers passed legislation last month that tourism officials said could generate millions of dollars to market Maryland while placing more power in the hands of those who promote Annapolis.

The Tourism Promotion Act of 2008, approved on the last day of the legislative session, was designed to reshape how the state funds its $11.4 billion tourism industry and make it more competitive with other states. Although the law sponsored by Sen. John Astle, D-Annapolis, was weakened when key mandated funding was removed, local tourism officials point to this legislation as the biggest structural change in state tourism funding since...
