Tougher crane rules face some opposition

BALTIMORE - Maryland officials want to make crane-safety regulations tougher than federal rules by requiring high levels of training for operators and riggers and state notification when companies use special lifts.

But at a public hearing on the regulations yesterday, representatives for small contractors said the tighter rules will hurt them financially, could cause layoffs and may put them at a disadvantage with unions during the recession.

Still, Maryland Labor and Industry Commissioner Ron DeJuliis said the large crowd of union and business representatives at the hearing was indicative of "how concerned everyone is...
