Conventional wisdom says security guards are a surefire way to keep criminals at bay.

Larry Adler, managing partner of Eyewitness Surveillance on Chinquapin Round Road, points out details from a camera operated by the company. Adler says the company’s gross income is expected to increase 85 percent this year, following a 65 percent increase in 2008 over 2007.But an Annapolis company called Eyewitness Surveillance is challenging that premise by working to eliminate the need for guards and provide full security coverage with its interactive video software - at a fraction of the cost.
