Chamber Notes: Council faces unenviable task in slots vote

Published 11/22/09

The long and arduous process of determining whether video lottery facilities are permitted in Anne Arundel County will hopefully come to a conclusion in the next few weeks when the County Council renders its decision on two zoning bills.

Our County Council officials are not in an enviable position. In hindsight, the Maryland General Assembly botched the process of legalizing video lottery facilities in Maryland.

Our current predicament shows serious flaws in the referendum process; particularly when used by elected officials to avoid making important, but difficult, decisions.

The introduction of legalized gaming in...

slots are good say the people - 2009-11-25 08:20:34

just not in my neighborhood. Why did people vote for slots if they do not really want them ? It is time for one of these weak county politicians to take a stance , have the political will to do something and do it now.

In the meantime, let's legalize marijuana for medicinal purposes and do some good for a change.

So any location is acceptable? - 2009-11-25 08:12:32

Well Bob, based on your analysis, any impact would be mitigated. If someone proposed the slot facility next-door to an elementary school, I guess you would be ok with that too. The same logic would apply. How many people here are ok with slots next to an elementary school?

is using the Insanity approach:

Doing the same thing again and again and expecting a different result.

Slots are not welcome - 2009-11-24 13:00:46

In view of the inevitable demise of slots as a source of revenue, NOW is the time to legalize ( decriminalize ) marijuana in this county. I am very serious, It would show we care about the sick that benefit from using medical marijuana and give us some good national attention. The fed has agreed the war on medical marijuana is not worth fighting and this would give us the opportunity to be an east coast leader. Slots are bad, pot is good.

There are legitimate concerns about public safety. It may come as a surprise residents there are only 15 units available in northern and southern districts on any shift, and if an officer is in court, they are not on the street. That is another issue, but it underlines that we need additional funds to hire more police. If the County Council wants to allay fears, it should focus on obligating casino operators to cover any cost for additional protection to safeguard citizens, all road improvements, fire protection, etc. Maximize the benefit to the community. I do not support gambling, but there was an election, the rules were established by our elected representatives and these were met by Cordish. What Mr. Burton's article clearly states is the Anne Arundel County Council has been kicking this ball down the road for months. That is irresponsible and unacceptable. If the Council thought this going to go away or voters would not notice, they were wrong. The Council, or any elected office, should not be considered as life-time employment. I don't care who gets re-elected, I haven't seen anything outstanding or even notable from the AACO Council. They are there to serve the community. I appreciate their service, but they are paid. Ducking issues is completely unacceptable and does not serve constituents. Council members who see their position as a spring board to higher office are not displaying necessary leadership and their performance will not be forgotten.

Adhere to Democracy - 2009-11-22 17:49:59

While I personally oppose gambling, my fellow citizens voted for a referendum in favor of allowing gambling. The County Council is trying to use zoning rules to interfere with the democratic process. The voters decided and that is what counts in the United States of America.

You are ingnoring a few things - 2009-11-22 08:31:30

1) John Leopold claims to have a plan to take the money out of the local area near a casino to benefit the entire County. If he finds a way top do this then there will be little to no money to mitigate impacts.

2) Where is the 1/4 mile protection given to the residents of Baltimore City? That seems to be a fact proponent love to ignore.

3) Can a developer make any claim about the number of homes (technically 'residential units') near a site to the State in order to get apporval...was that mentioned in the referendum language?

See www.stopslotsatamm.com for evidence of the true facts.
