Published 02/14/10
By Shannon Lee Zirkle, The Capital Claire Louder, president of the West County Chamber of Commerce in Odenton, discusses the changing landscape of west county’s economy and how the recession has stunted its progress.

Odenton, Hanover, Gambrills and Pasadena are poised.

The land and the interest from developers are already there and waiting.

But some believe the large population influx to west county over the next few years will turn its development into a race against the clock to see construction through to its finish.

Claire Louder, the president and chief executive officer of the West County Chamber of Commerce, is one business leader vying for infrastructure improvements, public investments and legislative assistance to expedite crucial plans for the areas surrounding the Fort George G. Meade military base.

Odenton/BRAC support - 2010-02-15 18:39:34

Odenton will be a major employment center with the influx of goverment jobs. The realignment is fostering defense industry private sector employment. Unfortunately the on-base office development has resulted in a 'loss' of impact fees for the County. Maryland's members in Congress should be our voice to assure the Federal government compensates the County for a portion of the loss in impact fees. Those impact costs re significant. Historically impact fees for new construction have not been adequate and the 78% of the cost have been paid for by existing County homeowners. This unfair and unacceptable. New development should cover associated infrastructure costs for new schools, water, sewer, roads, fire and safety. The State and County can assist with supporting bonds, but not subsidizing or shifting the cost of the developer. Odenton's asset is the train and opportunity to link with Baltimore and Washington. West County is a great location and the private sector understands this is a great opportunity. Mr. Leopold and the Council need to facilitate permitting and supporting necessary road, water and sewer component. This is a great opportunity for both public and private sector cooperation.
