RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Virginia's blue crab season opened Wednesday for the first time since hundreds of watermen sold back their license to the state to ease catch pressures on the Chesapeake Bay delicacy.
But cold waters were likely to keep crabbers off the water, with their catch still stirring from a winter hibernation.
Less than one-fourth of Virginia's eligible crabbers had purchased licenses for the season's open. A spokesman for the Virginia Marine Resources Commission said the number has more to do with the weather than regulatory actions or watermen giving up on their backbreaking work.
