Instead of flashy film posters of stars like Jennifer Aniston and Matt Damon, the windows of an Annapolis video store are lined with "Everything on sale" and "Store Closing" signs in harsh traffic-cone colors.
By Joshua McKerrow — The Capital
Clerks from the Blockbusters in Crofton, above, and on Hillsmere Drive in Annapolis told customers they’ll close both stores on Sept. 19. They join stores in Parole, Glen Burnie and Edgewater that have closed in recent years.
Inside the Blockbuster on Hillsmere Drive last week, a few employees weren't checking movies in and out for customers but busy preparing for liquidation.
One associate stood at the counter, a stack of DVD cases beside him, cutting cellophane wrapping to prepare the movies for sale.
Another employee said he wasn't sure what he'd do after the store shutters because it has been his job...

I will miss blockbuster... - 2010-08-30 17:36:30
...for the simple reason that they sold weird movies sometimes for really cheap in the 'previously viewed' bin. Beat the hell out of looking around at Best Buy for Akira Kurosawa, or Todd Browning. Bought his 1929 movie, 'Freaks" for 3 bucks!! Which I totally recommend. I thought it was going to be scarey and campy, but instead totally brought tears to my eyes. Ah, they dont tell stories like they used to.

Power to the customer - 2010-08-30 13:04:14
I agree with KH. Netflix offers a great service at a reasonable price.
Blockbuster had the opportunity to crush Netflix, by offering the same services as Netflix while also allowing in store exchanges. Initially it worked great, but as soon as Blockbuster no longer allowed exchanges I signed up with Netflix.

Try Netflix - 2010-08-30 11:36:48
I think you will find you like it much better than Blockbuster, Redbox, or anything else out there and it is really reasonable

Redbox trumps Blockbuster! - 2010-08-30 08:46:23
Redbox offers movies for $1 a night, convenient locations, and you can return the movie to any location. Sounds better then the $5 Blockbuster charges. Not to mention the annoying sales pitch you get on all the "great" services they offer and snack selection.
It doesnt bother me in the least to see the Blockbuster stores go. When you dont change your business model to keep up with the needs of the customer, competition will always come in and win!
Ill take the ridiculous redboxs any day. Sayanora Blockbuster!

Yes..... - 2010-08-30 00:21:14
And now we all get to go to those Totally Safe (Not!) ridiculous looking Red Kiosks and provide our credit card information to obtain a DVD.
What a Novel idea.
