Consumers become more aware of food safety concerns

To say that Deanna Baldwin has stared into the yolks of dozens upon dozens of eggs would still be a vast understatement.

Massive egg recalls from a plant in Iowa due to a salmonella outbreak have made consumers more alert about where their eggs come from and forced inspectors to ramp up their oversight to make sure none of the affected eggs make their way into the state.
Baldwin, now the program manager for Food Quality Assurance at the Maryland Department of Agriculture, got her start as a state egg inspector 31 years ago, making site visits to large and small farms all over the state, including Anne Arundel County, as well as restaurants and vendors.
Over the past few weeks, Baldwin's specialized job - one that many residents may not have known about or even considered - has just gotten a lot tougher.
