This week I remember Joan Scurlock who spent the last years of her life exploring the tale of yet another city that we don't talk much about and that is the tale of the free blacks in Annapolis. For some reason we become fixated on slavery. However, there were two distinct African-American societies here: one enslaved and one free.
And, of course, when slavery was over, this separation lasted more than 100 years, if not more.
Thanks to Joan and what she discovered, we know much more about free blacks...
